Tupac Shakur: The Life and Times of an American Icon, by Tayannah Lee McQuillar

From Publishers Weekly

Since his untimely death in 1996, rapper Tupac Shakur has been memorialized in a wide range of books and documentary films, but few are as exhaustively researched and contextualized as this latest, unauthorized biography from author McQuillar (When Rap Music Had a Conscience) and history professor Johnson. Seeking to understand the enigmatic performer, McQuillar and Johnson have enlisted a psychologist to profile Shakur, looked into a century of his family history, and paid particular attention to the political background of his mother, Afeni, a former Black Panther. The result is insightful, enjoyable and expansive, even if it doesn't answer the questions that still linger regarding Shakur's celebrity lifestyle and still-unsolved murder. For casual fans with no prior exposure to Shakur's life, this biography will prove thorough and accessible, with lengthy but informative tangents that cover seemingly all of Tupac's collaborators and associates. Readers looking for glitzy speculation will not find it here, and Tupac enthusiasts may not learn much new, but this undeniably solid biography will deepen anyone's appreciation of the hip-hop legend. From Booklist

In September 1996, musician and actor Tupac Shakur was gunned down on a Las Vegas street. His murder has never been solved. Although he released his first album only in 1991, by the time of his death Shakur was at the top of his field, a smash-hit recording artist who had also received acclaim for acting in such movies as Juice and Poetic Justice. He had also seen his share of controversy: an armed robbery in which he was shot several times; the murder of a former friend (in which some observers tried to implicate Shakur); a conviction and prison sentence for sexual assault. The authors acknowledge Shakur’s deeply troubled childhood—his mother, a former Black Panther, was tried (and acquitted) for conspiracy to commit murder; his stepfather was on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list—but they also celebrate the rapper’s intelligence and his gifts as an artist who wrote about love and respect, not hate and violence. The Shakur who emerges here is no illiterate gangster-turned-gangsta but, rather, a bright, artistic, driven man whose life and career continue to inspire many people. --David Pitt

This book is amazing and heart-wrenching. I could feel the tears, especially at the end when they were describing his death. Tupac is such a well known and well loved historical figure and we missed out on all he could be. He died at a tender 25 and the world and music are suffering for it. This book went into detailed history and really solidified his diverse of a character Tupac was and lets the world know he wasn't just some gangster but a beautiful black man with a heart for the downtrodden. Love Tupac FOREVER!

I like this book. If I have a complaints= it would be that other characters in the book have their life story told. I just really wanted to know about Tupac.

Book goes way too far in detail to other people besides Tupac. Writing is marginal at best, still looking for that killer Tupac book that really does it for me.

It was interesting and the historical parts of the text were enlightening but parts of the text were not written as well as other parts so I felt that let the book down a little. Overall I enjoyed the book and perhaps now know why young people identify with the rap/hiphop genre of music. (which I don't particularly like but now have a deeper understanding of and appreciation for.) It's good to broaden ones horizons.

Should be a great read!

I learned more about Tupac and more understanding of his life couldn't put the book down one of my favorite books ever so i think anyone should get this book if your a real fan of Tupac RIP Tupac Thug Life Forever.

Awesome

I am fascinated with languages and trying to learn as many as I can. Learning languages is like getting a new life, with a completely new world of meanings and feelings opening up in the front of your eyes and mind. As a translator myself, I know that there are so many words hard to translate and finding locals equivalents is rather an approximation of the meaning than a reproduction of the word. Therefore, I approached The Happiness Passport by Megan C. Hayes with a lot of curiosity, but also keen to learn new words. Although it makes the world tour in just 50 words, there are enough new insights into languages to win you more than a life. The words chosen are mostly words of yearning, expressing familiarity, intimacy and happiness. Words deeply rooted into the culture telling in just a few letters unique ancient stories full of hidden meanings to the non-native speaker. Take, for instance the Russian prostor which means yearning for wide plains. Or the Innuit unikkaagatigunniq, which reflects 'the power of storytelling and the role of stories in the communal ways of being'. I've also learned on this occasion two English words: petrichor - 'a noun that describes the pleasantly earthy smell of rain after a long period of dry, warm weather' and psithurism - 'the sound of wind whispering through the trees'. And I was reminded of an old Hungarian expression: 'Ugy szép az élet, hazajlik', meaning approximatively: 'Life is beautiful if it is happening'.Of course there are many more than 50 words to catch the spirit of the world, as the number of spoken languages and dialects in the world is impressively high, but this small level approach open up your eyes to search in your own native language(s) about those words that are impossible to substitute. The illustrations, the work of Yelena Bryksenova are nostalgic, romantic pastels that inspire to meditate about life, worlds and its making in words.Disclaimer: Book offered by the publisher in exchange for an honest review

When I was in college, I took an Anthropology course. The professor spoke about how different cultures have words for the things that they need; an example of this was the many words for snow that those who lived in very Northern climates traditionally had and the number of words for cars in the U.S. I thought about this as I began to read through The Happiness Passport. The connections between words and culture are every where in this lovely book. The Happiness Passport is organized into sections. They include chapters on the following:Home and EnvironmentCommunity and RelationshipsJoy and SpiritualityBalance and CalmAs I began to read, I was bookmarking and underlining so I could share with you. I was starting to have no un-bookmarked pages so that had to stop! Instead I will say that many countries and cultures are represented in the book. Some terms will be familiar to you like “hygge.” Others you will not have heard of. I can tell you that each word and write up will make you think about your life and what you value. This book is enhanced by what I found to be very calm and lovely muted color illustrations. I recommend that you take a look at this one. It is a perfect antidote to the frenetic holiday season. Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto for this one.

I have a distinct joy in reading books that discuss concepts from around the world that relate to happiness, plenty, and coziness. I don't really know anyone else in my friend circles who does. I have read so many books on hygge, fika, lagom, and ikigai that I feel like I should have gotten the concept by now. Luckily I have; these are ideas that I try to work into my everyday life.  Being an American who is living in Mexico, I had to very quickly adjust to a different pace of life and set of priorities. The Happiness Passport: A World Tour of Joyful Living in 50 Words by Megan Hayes, seemed like a book right up my alley. As soon as I saw it, I was attracted to it and requested to review it on NetGalley. I was approved and started reading it as soon as I got it. Also, I should note that the cover illustrations are so darn cute!  This book is divided into five sections--home & environment, community & relationships, character & soul, joy & spirituality, and balance & calm-- that discuss 10 words each from other languages and cultures that relate to those topics. Each word discussion is about a page long and gives the origin and meaning of the word, as well as a brief discussion of the concept that it illustrates. I will be honest, I found myself starting a journal entry to collect words and ideas that I could see myself either researching more or working into my life and ways of thinking. I really liked reading it and I devoured it in two sittings. The text is easy to read and the whimsy illustrations are perhaps my favorite. They are so darn cute and each illustration fits the word it accompanies. I think that this is a book that I will definitely buy in hardcover at some point just to have, if I ever need it again. While this book isn't a gripping story or intense drama, it is still important to read books like this as they are entryways to thinking and living differently. I haven't read all the hygge books I have because I just enjoy the writing form or being told how to decorate and make things cozy, but rather, I have read those books and The Happiness Passport, as ways to further my personal growth and to reinforce concepts that I want to work into my life. For me, reading is and should be a pleasurable experience, but it should also teach you something. Am I saying to read a non-fiction or educational book everytime you read, NO WAY! But I am saying that learning is an important aspect of life and growth. You may learn by reading books on mechanical engineering or books about concepts of coziness and happiness. Or you may learn by reading mysteries or gory horror novels. Whatever it is, you do you! This book has stirred in me an internal conversation about happiness and how that is so drastically different between people. As this book illustrates through both its collection of 50 words from around the world, but also its planned breakdown through categories, that happiness isn't just an emotion or feeling. It is a collection of circumstances, feelings, people, environments, objects, and time that varies so drastically. For me, the grand takeaway is that happiness is a universal idea that we are all striving for, no matter our culture or history, our skin color or the language we speak. These characteristics of us do not change the move we all have towards happiness in our lives. We are all looking for our eucatastrophe (I learned this word from the book)!

Note: some of the citations in this thing are wrong. They're usually quite dingbat mistakes, where you can figure out what the correct citation is if you spend a few seconds thinking about it, but still, it's annoying. For instance, a citation reading GetYourShitStraight v. RookieMistakes, 123 F.2d 456, 789 P.3d 012, might have the first three digits of the two sources reversed. You plug in the citation and Westlaw or Lexis gives you the wrong case instead of GetYourShitStraight. You ask someone else to check and they come up with the same results. You begin to rethink your career choices and then you decide to swap the digits and, bam, the case comes up. Stupid stuff like that. It's happened a few times, but it's gotten to the point where know what mistakes the author makes and I can guess the correct cite. I should probably just get a new book.

This book is a must for anyone interested in an extensive overview of antitrust. All topics (and there are many) are written in clear, clean, and engaging language. All are followed by examples, which I found invaluable. Extremely well organized and thoughtfully put together, this book is invaluable for students of antitrust, journalists who need to understand antitrust law, as well as professionals.Topics covered include predatory pricing, horizontal and vertical mergers, monopolies, monopsonies, oligopolies, and much more. I have referred to the glossary of terms more times than I can count. While educational and instructive, it was also a great read. Thank you Professor Sagers!!

My antitrust professor and casebook were pretty unclear, for me at least. I used this for creating my outline and to formulate my analysis for attacking antitrust problems on an exam. This E&E was really helpful in that regard—but there aren’t many actual examples and explanations, so if you’re looking for practice problems, this probably isn’t the supplement for you. That being said, antitrust law is all about working through an analysis (market definition, market power, procompetitve justifications, etc.) rather than reaching a concrete conclusion, so practice problems aren’t as important as they might be in other courses. This supplement frames the analysis in an easy to understand manner and discusses all the important cases.

After reading this, know less than when I started. Granted I fell down the stairs and my eyes don’t focus right anymore, and they no longer point in the right direction.Strongly recommended. You better order this or else!

I got this book as I felt that I would need something to complement the poorly written and structured coursebook that my professor assigned for the antitrust law exam. This book has been great for that purpose. It's well-structured and does a great job of explaining what the rules derived from different cases in antitrust law are. While this book is somewhat shorter than my coursebook, it still contains all the relevant cases.Although I used this book to help my prepare for my antitrust law exam, I think this also would be a good book to read if you for some other reason want to familiarize yourself with antitrust. The book is pleasant to read and even funny at times, and the chapters are not too long.

Professor Sagers does an excellent job laying out the principles of Antitrust Law.

From the Back Cover

Your innovative, user-friendly guide for biblical discipleshipThe greatest challenge for the twenty-first-century church is the lack of training in biblical and doctrinal knowledge. We are raising up generations of Christians who often have little idea what they should believe and why they should believe it. Grounded in the Faith takes up that challenge with twenty-four low-prep, in-depth sessions that will ground believers in the basics of their faith. This field-tested guide to growth in the Christian faith covers important topics such as justification, overcoming temptation, sanctification, evidence for the inspiration of the Bible, the value of prayer, the guidance of God, the Trinity, the uniqueness of Christ, and the attributes of God."In our postmodern world, it is so critical to become grounded in the historic doctrines of our Christian faith--this is why I commend Kenneth Erisman for this excellent discipleship guide. Both new and mature believers in Christ can benefit from these timeless and faith-strengthening insights."--Joni Eareckson Tada, Joni and Friends International "An outstanding tool to use in helping believers understand and embrace the basic doctrines of Scripture. It is simple enough to use with new believers and comprehensive enough to use with those who have been believers for some time but have never been taught basic theology. I know of no other discipleship tool like it available today."--Jerry Bridges, author of The Pursuit of Holiness"Under Coach Erisman's tutelage, the Christian learns the heavenly game plan and how to execute it well, and the church team will come to its destined maturity in Christ Jesus."--Bruce K. Waltke, professor of Old Testament at Knox Theological Seminary"This is discipleship as it was meant to be: God-centered, Christ-exalting, and solidly grounded in the authority of Holy Scripture. There's nothing superficial in the spirituality Erisman promotes. It is biblically rigorous, culturally relevant, and focused on producing grace-empowered and spiritually discerning followers of Christ."--Sam Storms, Enjoying God Ministries, author of Pleasures EvermoreKenneth Erisman has an MA in New Testament Literature and Exegesis from Calvary Theological Seminary (Kansas City) and a ThM from Dallas Theological Seminary. I absolutely love everything about this book. Over the years, I've examined dozens if not hundreds of books on discipleship and making disciples. While they were all well-intentioned, I found them lacking. I was looking for a user-friendly, engaging book that could be used by new believers individually, in a small group or in, especially, a one-on-one mentoring setting. This is the book. Theologically solid and practical. We'll be using this extensively in our church.

This is a helpful resource for discipleship, either one-on-one or in a group. The topics covered are the essentials and they are covered at an introductory level as well as at a deeper level. I found it very helpful and will continue to use it in ministry!

Finally answers to such important questions believers need to understand to grow spiritually! Thanks for including classic authors who speak clearly for others to understand.

Excellent book. Easy to read and understand. It is a great resource for an individual or a Small group or Bible study.

Very user friendly and extremely helpful explaining the doctrines of the Christian faith- "God-centered and Christ-exalting". I highly recommend this book!!

Well written book on how to analyze your personal beliefs.Gordon

What exactly is the biggest challenge in modern Christianity? Echoing Dr J.I. Packer's word, it can be summed up in one word: "catechesis." Arguing that there is a tight correlation between "wise catechesis" and the health of the Church, this guide is written for Churches and believers to adopt a step by step curriculum that can be used for empowering the teachers, equipping the believers, and engaging the world. Is this a tall order?Ken Erisman believes it is possible, and proposes a three stage learning paradigm. Firstly, he urges readers and learners to listen to the what for the message of truth in the Bible. Secondly, he encourages them to absorb the truth through thinking, pausing, reflecting, and integrate them. Thirdly, he exhorts them to let the truths they have learned, to help them interact with the world. Thus, there is a lot of learning as well as equipping going on. With this three-step paradigm, the author skillfully guides readers through three levels of biblical engagement.Level One begins with very basic stuff: Justification; calling of the believers; Salvation; Regeneration; Doctrine of Man and Sin; Temptations; Sanctification; and Scripture. It goes back to the very beginning why we need God in the first place. For unless we all recognize the need, there is very little reason to get back to addressing any need at all! Putting things first, Erisman highlights that man by himself is never good enough. He cannot justify himself. Life is more than good works. We cannot be righteous in our own strength. Through the doctrine of justification by faith, we are reminded again that justification is by God and from God. Erisman goes through the Ten Commandments, Romans, Galatians, with frequent interjections by renowned believers such as Tim Keller, CS Lewis, Philip Graham Ryken and many more to shed farther perspectives on this topic. He talks about the five "incredible spiritual benefits" of calling, regeneration, conversion, salvation, and adoption as children of God. Understanding the significance of each helps us appreciate the immense gift of God in Christ Jesus for us. Then Erisman goes to the other end to show us how vulnerable we are even when we have been justified: Temptations of the devil, the flesh, and the world. For many of us, just to know the different ways temptations can come at us will help us be more spiritually vigilant. Having done the initial benefits and risks description, Erisman ups the stake by exhorting all toward sanctification in Christ. For when we become like Jesus, we will move to a realm where our natural tendency is not to sin, but to be holy. The way to cultivate this holiness is Scripture, which Erisman presents five reasons why Scripture is so critical to the life of the believer.- Jesus held the Word highly, and so should we;- Jesus's Word is eternal, and so too the Scriptures;- Scripture is all inspired by God;- Scripture inculcates faith in us;- Scripture gives us hope and joy.Level Two progresses into an intermediate level. Here, Erisman defends the reliability of the Bible; modes and models of prayer; God's will; and the Trinity. He puts forth four reasons for believing the Bible's divine sources; the Y.M.C.A way to understand the Bible as the Word of God; and affirms again the accuracy and trustworthiness of the Bible. He lists the Lord's Prayer as one of the most essential elements of the Christian life, highlighting six aspects of the prayer for readers to take note of. Prayer and the seeking of God's will go hand in hand. An interesting part is how Erisman describes the "seven specific ways" to discern God's will. He ends the chapter on the subject of the Trinity, and how the Christian needs to appreciate the Trinity as a mystery as well as learning what has been revealed in the Bible. He also highlights the erroneous claims of modalism, tritheism, arianism, and why they do not reflect the Trinity of the Bible.Level Three is about Christ, the attributes and character of God, and the nature of God. Jesus is unique, fully divine as well as fully human. God preserves his children through perseverance, preservation, and assurance. Learning the attributes of God will show us exactly why God instructs the children of God to be. For instance, those who know God will be those who have great energy, great thoughts, great boldness, and great contentment in God. In knowing God better, we too will naturally grow to be better people too. Other questions are also dealt with such as,Does God really need our glorifying of him?Why does the Bible calls God as "jealous?"What about the "wrath of God?"If God created everything, it it then true that God is the author of sin?...These and many more are covered in clear and poignant ways.So What?I remember a time when books by the late Paul E. Little were popular with my circle of friends. Books like "Know What You Believe," Know Why You Believe," and "How to Give Away Your Faith" are remain respectable on Amazon rankings to this day. Reading this book is like combining some of the best parts of those three books into one. More than that, this book is a book of theology made simple for the layperson. I find the book very light in terms of its delivery, but upon seeing the scope of coverage and the important issues it highlights, I have to constantly remind myself not to belittle the simple words. For the most profound truths can come forth through the simplest words. In reading the book, readers will be encouraged that studying theology need not mean plowing through thick encyclopedia-sized textbooks or leafing through dated documents by dead theologians. Theology is very much ancient and contemporary, reverent and relevant, heaven-focused and earthly minded. In trying to make the best sense of the book, let me offer a L.A.I.T.Y acronym to be used as a pedagogical handle. The first three is borrowed from Erisman's three-step paradigm for learning. The next two is my contribution to make the acronym work.First, Listen for teaching moments. There is no need to jump through the pages just to find something that resonates with our heart. If readers find something interesting or troubling, just pause and listen through the words, asking God what it all means.Second, Absorb the word of God. Let the Scripture references be the anchor for all the descriptions that Erisman have done. After all, any other text book or human authors can only try to shed light on the Main Deal: The Bible. Consider the Bible references and read this book with an open Bible. Absorb through memorizing the Word of God.Third, Interact broadly and boldly. The Word of God is not meant to just paralyze us into a closed ended analytical exercise. There are contemporary moments in which what we learn can be put into practice in our daily lives. Perhaps, the interaction begins with saying out the Word of God from memory.Fourth, be Teachable. In our day and age, it is easy to let knowledge and the accumulation of know-how puff us up. As we go forth to engage the world, to equip believers, and to exhort the Church to do more, we need to be reminded that we too are works in progress. We too need to be constantly learning. Being a disciple is essentially about being a learner too. Our humility is reflected through our teachability.Fifth, Yield to the Spirit of God to guide us. There is no guarantee that whatever we have learned will have an immediate application. Sometimes, we just need to bide our time and wait for the right opportunity. This is where cultivating a sensitivity to the leading of the Holy Spirit is important. The ability to yield to God is an indication of our relationship with God in the first place.Overall, I recommend this book for the equipping of the laity in Christian Education.Rating: 5 stars of 5.conradeThis book is provided to me free by Baker Books and NetGalley without any obligation for a positive review. Catechism. Even worse, catechesis. These were words that once struck fear into my heart, or if not fear, dread at least. Whatever the emotion, I have had an uneven history with catechisms. I was catechized as a child and as a teen. This involved memorizing questions and answers from the Heidelberg Catechism, then standing before a minister and a class of fellow students to recite what I had learned. "What is your only comfort in life and death?" he would ask. And I would recite, "That I am not my own, but belong in body and soul, both in life and death, to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ..."It is only in adult life that I came to appreciate those Tuesday evenings at the church and those Tuesday afternoons on the school bus, trying desperately to cram those answers into my brain. And it is only more recently still that I came to understand that catechesis is not so much about memorization and rote recital as it is about systematic instruction. Catechizing a child does not demand memorization and recitation, though these may be helpful, but it does demand systematic instruction. The Heidelberg Catechism is not a book to be memorized as much as it is a well-rounded and systematic exposition of the Christian life that is meant to be understood so it may in turn be applied. I am convinced that somewhere, somehow, those classes from long ago are somehow manifesting themselves in my life today.Catechizing has fallen out of favor in most Christian traditions and we are undoubtedly the worse for it. Just a few years ago J.I. Packer offered this perspective, this challenge: "Where wise catechesis has flourished, the church has flourished. Where it has been neglected, the church has floundered."Grounded in the Faith is a new tool for catechesis, that is, for laying a consistent, systematic groundwork for the Christian life. Kenneth Erisman, its author, writes, "The aim of this book is to see the church flourish for the glory of God. We are convinced that by designing this guide to be user-friendly but at the same time keeping Reformation depth, followers of Christ will have a transferable tool to become grounded in the faith."Indeed, they will. In three levels (sections) and twenty-four chapters, Erisman advances from the elementary doctrines of the Christian faith (justification, sanctification, overcoming sin and temptation, and the importance of Scripture) to level two (the inspiration of Scripture, prayer, guidance and the will of God, and the Trinity) and finally to level three (the humanity and divinity of Jesus Christ, perseverance and assurance, the attributes of God and the mystery of God's sovereignty). Each chapter follows a consistent format of listen (read a short lesson), absorb (pause and think) and interact (answer questions of comprehension and application). Every chapter concludes with a section geared toward cultivating spiritual habits such as Scripture reading, praying and memorizing Scripture. It is all packaged in an attractive and contemporary paperback workbook format. But I know you have a greater concern than the format and layout. You want to know about the teaching. The author gave a hint earlier when he wrote of "Reformation depth." Erisman sticks very closely to the doctrine of the Reformation. You can get a good sense of where he goes from the list of sources cited and the list of endorsers. For example, in his discussion of the Trinity he relies primarily on James White with several hat tips to Wayne Grudem, while in two chapters on the sovereignty of God, he cites John Piper, Louis Berkhof, and John Flavel while tracking very closely with R.C. Sproul. Meanwhile, the book carries endorsements from Jerry Bridges (who calls it "an outstanding tool" for discipleship), Bruce Waltke, Sam Storms and Joni Eareckson Tada.Grounded in the Faith is a book you will find useful for one-on-one or group discipleship or, dare I say it, catechesis. It is a book parents may want to use with their children. It is a book for mature believers to go through with and beside new Christians. It is one for pastors to stock up on. It is, as Sam Storm says, "discipleship as it was meant to be: God-centered, Christ-exalting, and solidly grounded in the authority of Holy Scripture." I am excited about it and give it my highest recommendation.
