This is a very readable book on Lutheran theology, no academise. The chapters are each on a separate area of Luther's theology. The author is not dogmatic, in other words, Luther's theology isn't the be all to end all.The author compares and contrasts Luther's theology to Calvin's, the Roman Catholic church, and the Orthodox church, in each chapter. He also paints a picture of how the world view of the 16th century influenced Luther's theology in ways that may seem odd to 21st century readers.

Best overview over M Luthers Theology

Lohse leads the reader to the top of the mountain of the reformer Martin Luther's theological thoughts with a breathtaking view over the landscape of peace and grace, struggle and victory in the land of justification by faith.Lohse, a leading german Luther scholar, presents the thoughts and theology of Luther in both a historic generic and a systematic perspective which gives a good understanding of both themes and context.

Anyone attempting to get a fuller understanding of Luther's progressive and topical theology should read this. It handles quite will the timeline of Luther's theological evolution, while also dealing with the important topics that make lutheranism what it is today.

Interesting look at Luther

son likes it

Bernhard Lohse is not to be taken lightly or criticized hastily. This is indeed a magisterial study of Luther, both from the perspective of historical theology and from systematic theology. I would not discourage anyone from buying it. BUT -- there is a decisive flaw in Lohse's interpretation of Luther: he almost never cites or goes into depth with Luther's Latin exegetical writings, but is primarily influenced by his German polemical and pastoral works. The eminent Luther scholar, David Steinmetz, long ago made the comment to me that the study of Luther should focus on his Latin academic lectures and disputations, because that is what Luther did regularly and systematically -- Luther was a biblical theologian at a university. Steinmetz was right. And Lohse's book is tilted in a very "Protestant" direction because of that. This very "Protestant" tilt to Lohse's study of Luther does not skew or obscure Luther; but it definitely leads with a portrayal of Luther as the Protestant leader of a decisive Reform movement. Luther never saw himself in this way, and indeed throughout his life denied it, often saying he and his colleagues were drinking beer in the Wittenberg tavern while the Holy Spirit carried out the Reformation. Luther always first and foremost saw himself in the position to which he had been called and appointed: Professor of Theology. While Lohse does indeed acknowledge some of the Latin writings and academic works of Luther, he is far more interested in Luther's polemical writings, seeing these as defining the Reformation. If one sees Luther as theologian and biblical scholar, the rift between "Lutheranism" and "Catholicism" -- while still definitely there -- takes on a new and, today, hopeful perspective.FYI: I suppose it would be possible to print this book in an even smaller font, but it would laborious. I have Bibles in larger font than this book, and more to the point, I do not have any books with this small a font. It was extremely difficult for me, with my poor eyesight, to read through this book. If Fortress Press had decided they could afford to make the book 435 pages 321 pages, that little increase in font would have made it much more comfortable to read.

I am a Lutheran pastor. I have read many books on the subject of Luther's theology over the years. This one took me close to a year. It brought out a lot of thought and reflection on my part. My copy is marked with many post-its and the like. Here is the best part: Barth really has wrestled with Luther, in great detail, and attempts (and succeeds, in my opinion) to faithfully state what Luther actually believed on a given issue. He is critical of Luther's opinions, sometimes giving voice to issues I have had in understanding the great reformer, at other times, I found myself throwing Barth's opinions out the window. Whenever Barth started speaking of 'we of modern times', that is when much of whatever came next was just.... an expression of a modern German professor. I found this book helpful, because it brought great insight to Luther the theologian. It was helpful, because of Barth's honesty, readability, insight and completeness of his own knowledge of Luther. I would recommend this work to any specialist seeking to interact with Luther as a world shaping thinker. However, just as Barth interacts critically of his subject, I would encourage every reader to be likewise critical of Barth's work and thought. He has opinions that simply go a different direction for me.

#11,736 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I was very curious about this book. When I received it I began to read it the same day. I could not put it down. The book was so involving, I had finished it in 3 days. The books goes on to talk about various theories, and it was very interesting how the imagination works. I would say I gained personal development from reading this book, in a way I know how I personally operate, and cognitively retain information and well as tendencies. I would highly recommend this book for those who like to think outside the box, or maybe those who might benefit from thinking outside the box. The return is a whole new view on what a "mindset" actually is.

In A Whole New Mind, Daniel Pink provides a compelling argument that right-brain–oriented skills sets—empathy, creativity, design, synthesis, and pattern recognition—are the ingredients for a “holistic mind-set,” today’s prerequisite for business success and a meaningful life.Engineering, accounting, law, and coding—left-brain–heavy professions—are now being outsourced to India, or performed by computers and robots.Pink gets into detail about how left-brain–focused professions, including medicine and business, are now placing a huge emphasis on right-brain smartness. He discusses how empathy and listening are the new sought-after skills for physicians and how business recruiters are favoring art degrees over MBAs.I think this book is important for anyone entering the workplace, looking for work, or heading up a company (CEOs and managers). The tools and tips discussed can help current businesses stay innovative by sparking right-brain activity through incorporating laughter, fun, and spirituality into people’s workflow.I like Pink’s “portfolio” sections at the end of each chapter that provide how-to exercises for increasing your right-brain activity. This book will spark your creative juices and encourage you to think differently about work and meaning in your life.I give it five stars!

wonderful book.....I am in my 60's and taking a ceramics class in a local college.... this book was required reading.....so....it was interesting, after reading it, to sit down and have a book discussion in class with people of all ages....and hear the ideas this book sparked. Mr. Pink brings all the warmth and fuzziness of your grandmother together with the logic of your math teacher and fuses together the import attributes that will fuel this age. Integrating the right minded capabilities of empathy , creativity and all the right brain attributes with the left brain attributes of logic, order etc. I would encourage everyone....of any age.....to read this illuminating book.

As best summarized by the author: "This book describes a seismic--though as yet undetected--shift now under way in much of the advanced world. We are moving from an economy and a society built on the logical, linear, computerlike capabilities of the Information Age to an economy and a society built on the inventive, empathic, big-picture capabilities of what's rising in its place, the Conceptual Age."Below are key excerpts from the book that I found particularly insightful:1- "A change of such magnitude is complex. But the argument at the heart of this book is simple. For nearly a century, Western society in general, and American society in particular, has been dominated by a form of thinking and an approach to life that is narrowly reductive and deeply analytical. Ours has been the age of the "knowledge worker," the well-educated manipulator of information and deployer of expertise. But that is changing. Thanks to an array of forces - material abundance that is deepening our nonmaterial yearnings. globalization that is shipping white-collar work overseas, and powerful technologies that are eliminating certain kinds of work altogether--we are entering a new age. It is an age animated by a different form of thinking and a new approach to life--one that prizes aptitudes that I call "high concept" and "high touch." High concept involves the capacity to detect patterns and opportunities, to create artistic and emotional beauty, to craft a satisfying narrative, and to combine seemingly unrelated ideas into something new. High touch involves the ability to empathize with others, to understand the subtleties of human interaction, to find joy in one's self and to elicit it in others, and to stretch beyond the quotidian in pursuit of purpose and meaning."2- "With more than three decades of research on the brain's hemispheres, it's possible to distill the findings to four key differences. 1. The left hemisphere controls the right side of the body; the right hemisphere controls the left side of the body. 2. The left hemisphere is sequential; the right hemisphere is simultaneous. 3. The left hemisphere specializes in text; the right hemisphere specializes in context. 4. The left hemisphere analyzes the details; the right hemisphere synthesizes the big picture."3- "Three forces are tilting the scales in favor of R-Directed Thinking. Abundance has satisfied, and even oversatisfied, the material needs of millions--boosting the significance of beauty and emotion and accelerating individuals' search for meaning. Asia is now performing large amounts of routine, white-collar, L-Directed work It significantly lower costs, thereby forcing knowledge workers in the advanced world to master abilities that can't be shipped overseas. And automation has begun to affect this generation's white-collar workers in much the same way it did last generation's blue-collar workers, requiring L-Directed professionals to develop aptitudes that computers can't do better, faster, or cheaper."4- "We moved from the Agriculture Age to the Industrial Age to the Information Age. The latest instance of this pattern is today's transition from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age once again fed by affluence (the abundance that characterizes Western life), technological progress (the automation of several kinds of white-collar work), and globalization (certain types of knowledge work moving to Asia)."5- "In the Conceptual Age, we will need to complement our L-Directed I reasoning by mastering six essential R-Directed aptitudes. Together these six high-concept, high-touch senses can help develop the whole new mind this new era demands. 1. Not just function but also DESIGN. 2. Not just argument but also STORY. 3. Not just focus but also SYMPHONY. 4. Not just logic but also EMPATHY. 5. Not just seriousness but also PLAY. 6. Not just accumulation but also MEANING."6- "Design is a high-concept aptitude that is difficult to outsource or automate--and that increasingly confers a competitive advantage in business. Good design, now more accessible and affordable than ever also offers us a chance to bring pleasure, meaning, and beauty to our lives. But most important, cultivating a design sensibility can make our small planet a better place for us all."7- "Stories are easier to remember--because in many ways, stories are how we remember. "Narrative imagining-- story--is the fundamental instrument of thought," writes cognitive scientist Mark Turner in his book The Literary Mind. ""8- "Story exists where high concept and high touch intersect. Story is high concept because it sharpens our understanding of one thing by showing it in the context of something else..., Story is high touch because stories almost always pack an emotional punch."9- ""Storytelling doesn't replace analytical thinking," he says. "It supplements it by enabling us to imagine new perspectives and new worlds. . .. Abstract analysis is easier to understand when seen through the lens of a well-chosen story. " Now Denning is spreading his message-- and telling his story--to organizations worldwide. "10- "Like drawing, Symphony is largely about relationships. People who hope to thrive in the Conceptual Age must understand the connections between diverse, and seemingly separate, disciplines. They must know how to link apparently unconnected elements to create something new. And they must become adept at analogy--at seeing one thing in terms of another. There are ample opportunities, in other words, for three types of people: the boundary crosser, the inventor, and the metaphor maker. "11- "Empathy is the ability to imagine yourself in someone else's position and to intuit what that person is feeling. It is the ability to stanc in others' shoes, to see with their eyes, and to feel with their hearts. It is something we do pretty much spontaneously, an act of instinct rather than the product of deliberation. But Empathy isn't sympathy--that is, feeling bad/or someone else. It is feeling with someone else, sensing what it would be like to be that person. Empathy is a stunning act of imaginative derring-do, the ultimate virtual reality--climbing into another's mind to experience the world from that person's perspective. "12- "Empathy is neither a deviation from intelligence nor the single route to it. Sometimes we need detachment; many other times we need attunement. And the people who will thrive will be those who can toggle between the two. As we've seen again and again, the Conceptual Age requires androgynous minds."13- ""The opposite of play isn't work. It' depression. To play is to act out and be willful, exultant and committed as if one is assured of one's prospects. -BRIAN SUTTON-SMITH "14- ""Laughter can play a major role in reducing stress in the workplace,' he says. Kataria says that businesses believe that "serious people are more responsible. That's not true. That's yesterday's news. Laughing people are more creative people. They are more productive people. People who laugh together can work together." "15- "Our fundamental drive, the motivational engine that powers human existence, is the pursuit of meaning. Frankl's approach--called "logotherapy," for "logos" the Greek word for meaning--quickly became an influential movement in psychotherapy. "

In this book, the author explore right brained thinking and how the job market is being defined by right brained thinking. While this book was written a while, the premise that the author has shared has only become more true since the book was written, and its worth reading the book because it provides readers a way to understand how the modern world is changing and being defined by right brain thinking. The author also provides some useful exercises that can help you apply right brain thinking to your life.
