Great book. This review is for the Kindle edition. I was an avid hiker before I got my first dog, a Golden Retriever now 1 year and 10 months. When he was a lil' pup I may have been too ambitious taking him on some rock scrambles, so was looking for a book tailored (get it - "tail"-ored) (ok, bear with me) to pup and me. Found this gem. Every hike we've tried from this book (so far about seven of them) has been great. We usually do the moderate-difficult hikes, but last week I was getting over a cold and desperately wanted to go on a nature walk, so we chose one of the easy hikes. It was such a beautiful, pleasant adventure that I felt compelled to write this review (I don't usually write reviews) and now I want to do every hike in this book no matter the rating. The easy hike also reminded me of how pleasant it is to just go on a gentle walk through the woods every now and then, rather than an arduous hike every time.I disagree with most of the low-star reviews here. Regarding the MAPS: The maps in the book are simple and clear. They are excellent supplements to the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference Maps. The key word here is supplement. The NYNJTC maps are as detailed a trail map as you can get - they're absolutely wonderful, worth the extra money and *very* detailed. That's why the maps in this book are so helpful - they show you the hike, not every single cross-crossing trail. I find their simplicity very useful. They should be used as a supplement to the Trail Conference map. Go to nynjtc.org to get the detailed trail maps. Also the author tells you which NYNJTC map corresponds to each hike - very helpful. For the hikes that are not on NYNJTC maps, the author tells you where to get your map, and these instructions are accurate. Some of the smaller parks change the colors of their blazes, which is not the author's fault. That's why you need to get a map from the park itself or NYNJTC. Some of the smaller parks will have their maps in little boxes along the trail. Lovely. Regarding DRIVING DIRECTIONS: The directions given in the book are supplements to a GPS. Use your GPS for accurate driving directions. Regarding TRAIL DESCRIPTIONS: very nice to read before hand to get a description of the trail, amount of pup swimming available, etc.An additional nice thing is that pup and I hiked in Minnewaska and Harriman just using the NYNJTC maps, and this book is showing me some new, very nice trail combinations that I wouldn't have thought of otherwise. All in all, pup and I love this book!
I have used this book this winter. Pros: 1) The driving directions to the trail starting point are generally good. 2) distances and difficulty levels are useful in deciding which trail to do. 3) overall, a decent compilation. Cons: 1) the trail maps leave me wanting more detail; the maps included are only selected trails of the specific hiking location and provide no topography detail 2) some of the trail color markings are wrong and can misguide
Needs better maps
This delightful work is the latest in a series of books titled "Best Hikes with Dogs." Other areas previously covered include: Oregon, Colorado, New Jersey, Arizona, North Carolina, Las Vegas, and many more. The author has chosen 55 trails in the New York City, Long Island and Hudson Valley region suitable for canine expeditions. I was pleased to find that two of the hikes were in my town of Yorktown. I was really surprised to see the John Hand Park as one of them. Most Yorktowners have never heard of it or Blinn Road where the trail begins. The author is careful to select trails that are not too strenuous. For instance, her Hudson Highlands hike keeps to the valley between Mt. Taurus (Bull Hill) and Breakneck Ridge. Undoubtedly, the thousand-foot peaks along the Hudson River would be no problem for Lady, the dog who led me to the summit of Colorado's Mt. Princeton at 14,197 feet. For more difficult routes in this area, I agree with the author's recommendation of the "New York Walk Book."Each trail is well described along with the history of the area. Directions to the trailheads and parking areas are clear. Maps and altitude cross sections are provided for each hike. The book is filled with photos of the scenery, people, and, of course, happy dogs.
This book will give you a great starting point for finding dog-suitable hikes in the area. Be warned, however, that some of the hikes have poor directions or are outdated. In several cases, I found that trails had been re-blazed to a different color or rerouted entirely so that the descriptive directions were inaccurate (e.g. the trail now goes left instead of right). Do your own research beforehand and be sure to pick up an official park map if they are offered and you should be fine.
I bought this book because a) I love hiking and being outdoors and b) I have two lively dogs that I want to take on day trips with me. This book is part of a series which I had heard great things about from fellow dog owners. The author gives alot of detail about each trail. They are carefully mapped out and she lists hiking must-have's for humans and dogs alike. The trails are rated by difficulty levels and most of the hikes seem easy to moderate. The photos included are beautiful and really inspire you to get out into nature with your dog! We have already walked a trail that was listed for one of our local parks. I plan on doing many more, in different places, throughout the summer. I think this book is great for all those interested in hiking and bringing your canine companion along for exercise and an enjoyable day away from the city.
The book has given me some great ideas and information about new places to hike with my dog, but nearly every adventure turns into a misadventure. Trail descriptions are rather vague, and unless you are familiar with areas before you head in, you may easily get lost. In fact, one particular trail description for a hike in Harriman State Park provides grossly inaccurate information about the location of the parking lot!
