This is a very readable book on Lutheran theology, no academise. The chapters are each on a separate area of Luther's theology. The author is not dogmatic, in other words, Luther's theology isn't the be all to end all.The author compares and contrasts Luther's theology to Calvin's, the Roman Catholic church, and the Orthodox church, in each chapter. He also paints a picture of how the world view of the 16th century influenced Luther's theology in ways that may seem odd to 21st century readers.
Best overview over M Luthers Theology
Lohse leads the reader to the top of the mountain of the reformer Martin Luther's theological thoughts with a breathtaking view over the landscape of peace and grace, struggle and victory in the land of justification by faith.Lohse, a leading german Luther scholar, presents the thoughts and theology of Luther in both a historic generic and a systematic perspective which gives a good understanding of both themes and context.
Anyone attempting to get a fuller understanding of Luther's progressive and topical theology should read this. It handles quite will the timeline of Luther's theological evolution, while also dealing with the important topics that make lutheranism what it is today.
Interesting look at Luther
son likes it
Bernhard Lohse is not to be taken lightly or criticized hastily. This is indeed a magisterial study of Luther, both from the perspective of historical theology and from systematic theology. I would not discourage anyone from buying it. BUT -- there is a decisive flaw in Lohse's interpretation of Luther: he almost never cites or goes into depth with Luther's Latin exegetical writings, but is primarily influenced by his German polemical and pastoral works. The eminent Luther scholar, David Steinmetz, long ago made the comment to me that the study of Luther should focus on his Latin academic lectures and disputations, because that is what Luther did regularly and systematically -- Luther was a biblical theologian at a university. Steinmetz was right. And Lohse's book is tilted in a very "Protestant" direction because of that. This very "Protestant" tilt to Lohse's study of Luther does not skew or obscure Luther; but it definitely leads with a portrayal of Luther as the Protestant leader of a decisive Reform movement. Luther never saw himself in this way, and indeed throughout his life denied it, often saying he and his colleagues were drinking beer in the Wittenberg tavern while the Holy Spirit carried out the Reformation. Luther always first and foremost saw himself in the position to which he had been called and appointed: Professor of Theology. While Lohse does indeed acknowledge some of the Latin writings and academic works of Luther, he is far more interested in Luther's polemical writings, seeing these as defining the Reformation. If one sees Luther as theologian and biblical scholar, the rift between "Lutheranism" and "Catholicism" -- while still definitely there -- takes on a new and, today, hopeful perspective.FYI: I suppose it would be possible to print this book in an even smaller font, but it would laborious. I have Bibles in larger font than this book, and more to the point, I do not have any books with this small a font. It was extremely difficult for me, with my poor eyesight, to read through this book. If Fortress Press had decided they could afford to make the book 435 pages 321 pages, that little increase in font would have made it much more comfortable to read.
I am a Lutheran pastor. I have read many books on the subject of Luther's theology over the years. This one took me close to a year. It brought out a lot of thought and reflection on my part. My copy is marked with many post-its and the like. Here is the best part: Barth really has wrestled with Luther, in great detail, and attempts (and succeeds, in my opinion) to faithfully state what Luther actually believed on a given issue. He is critical of Luther's opinions, sometimes giving voice to issues I have had in understanding the great reformer, at other times, I found myself throwing Barth's opinions out the window. Whenever Barth started speaking of 'we of modern times', that is when much of whatever came next was just.... an expression of a modern German professor. I found this book helpful, because it brought great insight to Luther the theologian. It was helpful, because of Barth's honesty, readability, insight and completeness of his own knowledge of Luther. I would recommend this work to any specialist seeking to interact with Luther as a world shaping thinker. However, just as Barth interacts critically of his subject, I would encourage every reader to be likewise critical of Barth's work and thought. He has opinions that simply go a different direction for me.
