Fullerton's Introduction to Philosophy is an excellent path to the fascinating aspects of philosophy, still today, although first published hundred years ago. True although he says in his preface the opposite that "there cannot be said to be a beaten path in philosophy" and that he concludes his discussion of 'modern philosophy' by the admonition of his thesis 93. DO NOT HASTILY ACCEPT A DOCTRINE. But that is what philosophy is: a cavalcade of controversies.Fullerton announces his aim in six points:1. To point out what the word "philosophy" means.2. To explain the nature of reflective or philosophic thinking.3. To give a general view of the main problems in philosophy.4. To give account of some of the most important doctrines in philosophy.5. To indicate the relation of philosophy to other sciences.6. To show that the study of philosophy is of value to us all.The text is divided into parts correspondingly and emphasized in 93 theses. All in all it is easy to see that behind the presentation there is an experience of years, perhaps decades of teaching the subject to university students. No hunches but systematic and careful and well founded formulations to an audience first time meeting this subject. Therefore still today recommendable an introduction. And for that matter: philosophy is one of the oldest fields of systematic thinking, not outdated or obsolete in a century out of twentyfive at least. So, Fullerton can really be recommended, in the discussive sense of 'Socrates, that greatest of teachers'.

Having been an avid reader all my life, I'd read bits and pieces of Plato, Socrates, and other 'Philosophers' over the years, So when i saw this book, I thought to myself, why not? What a fascinating read! I had no idea of the depth and breadth of philosophy, going back as far as 5000 years by some estimates. The word itself comes from the Greek 'philosophia' which means "Love of Wisdom."The search for the meaning of all things real or unreal, wright or wrong, what is only in our minds and what is reality. And the debate, which has been going on those 5000 years is still going on.

The book was written in 1906, and I must say that it has an odd air about it. It has no title page and even the spine is without a title or the publisher? I suppose it's a public domain book; but on balance I'm glad that the publisher undertook the effort to re-issue it. Mr. Fullerton wrote this book at a time when psychology and philosophy were parting ways and as both a philosopher and psychologist he offers an interesting perspective from the period. He writes about philosophical ideas from his take on how these are understood by; 1) the plain man, 2) the scientist, and 3) the philosopher. He sees the plain man as informed by common sense. The scientist is more observant in his field and also builds on past knowledge. The philosopher engages in "reflection" of everything ignored or assumed by others.I hesitate to recommend this book to the general reader interested in an introduction to philosophy. Usually an introductory philosophy book uses an historical approach or a study of topics relating to the systematic branches such as epistemology, ethics, etc. The author's treatment does touch on most topics, but seems to use them only as a vehicle to focus on the topic of "mind" and from his "realist" viewpoint. I personally found the entire discussion on the "mind" very insightful, but the author goes overboard to the neglect of discussion of systematic topics that would be beneficial to those not familiar with traditional philosophy. I also found his ideas on "space" and "time" quite interesting but his metaphysical discussions might be considered quaint by today's anti-metaphysical philosophers. I would also add that his religious background has obviously biased and somewhat clouded his discussion of the philosophy of religion.Mr. Fullerton's focus on "mind" is not surprising because philosophers in general taken this subjective bypass in modern philosophy ever since Mr. Descartes figured out that he existed (or at least a thinking entity existed) and they have focused almost exclusively on what today is considered epistemology ever since. Much of what passes for philosophy today has an cryptic, amateur psychology ring about it in the realm and borderlands of metaphysics. Gone are the grand systems of thought presented by Aristotle, Kant, and others. Interestingly the author compares philosophy to poetry although he states as a maxim that standards of evidence for philosophy need to match those of science. Schools of thought such as "realist", "idealist", "monists', "dualists" and so forth are not to be thought of as the definitive eternal truth, but rather analogously as a "sect" or "political party" for a time and place, and furthermore to be agreed with only tentatively for good reason.None of what I've said detracts from the fascinating words of wisdom imparted by Mr. Fullerton but too much space is devoted in an attempt to motivate the reader into realizing the worth of philosophy itself. Presumably anyone undertaking to read the book is already motivated to do so, although perhaps he might be addressing someone like a student coerced into it as a required reading (as one student reviewer states elsewhere). I must sympathize with her as she says that it's a good book to put you to sleep at night. It seems that what most of us would call a paragraph full of ideas, Mr. Fullerton considered a run-on sentence. Mr. Fullerton uses little technical jargon, but the incessant run-on sentences, occasional double negatives, as well as the use of phraseology of the early 1900's comes across as an awkward style to follow. The strange formatting of paragraphs appears to divide them into smaller and more visually absorbable units. Ironically he addresses the issue of philosophers writing in a difficult and prosaic style, but neglects to consider himself as being in that category.

Although this is not a current book in Philosophy, Preface by George Fullerton dated 1906, I enjoy his approach to philosophy. It is a great read. His approach to all learning / Philosophy is intriguing to me. I will re-read this in the future.

I enjoyed this book very much. I am new to the philosophy world, so some of the terminology was new and confusing. I found myself reading some sections two and three times. The author sometimes produced a paragraph consisting of only one sentence accompanied by five or six commas. Very confusing at times. As for the content, I was pleased. I was able to learn quite a bit about the subject.

Still relevant over 100 years later. Covers the importance, history and major elements of philosophy. Not an easy read, nor a page turner. However, the material is good, relevant and written at a student level.

This book helps the beginner in philosophy to get familiarized with some of the terms, names, theories, and even philosophies. It is a very good point to start from or even to refresh the mind of those costumed to deal with philosophy.

Great, can't believeit's free

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-8-In 1950, 12-year-old Nadia emigrates from Europe to Canada and lives with people she's been instructed to call Mama and Papa. Nadia knows these are not her parents; she doesn't know why she's with them, but they've promised to keep her safe. Periodically, she has fragments of memories: living in a large house, speaking German (though she knows Ukrainian is her first language), being unhappy and afraid despite being well fed and cared for. She's blonde and blue-eyed and is teased by classmates who call her "Hitler girl." With only foggy memories of her life before Canada, she's afraid she was a Nazi-she even remembers meeting Hitler. With patient support from her adoptive parents, her memories grow clearer and she comes to understand her history. Excellent back matter about the Lebensborn program, a Nazi plan to increase the Aryan population, gives context to Nadia's story. The narrative is clear and straightforward, staying focused on the pain and confusion of Nadia's journey. The secondary characters are fleshed out just enough to make the story work, each serving to frame Nadia's experience. VERDICT This is a strong addition to World War II historical fiction collections, shining a light on a little-known aspect of the Nazi regime's insidious programs.-Carla Riemer, Claremont Middle School, Oakland, CAα(c) Copyright 2011. I read Beyond a Boundary for a class I am taking in Cultural Studies. I expected it to be really dull and boring as I am not into sport at all. But after reading it, it was really one of the most well-written and interesting books I've ever read.James' carefully crafted book relates his experience as a colonized subject of Britain in the West Indies and the way in which colonialism and British morals and values were spread in the colonies through cricket. Beautifully intertwined with James personal experiences growing up and attending British public school, the history of cricket and great cricketers is presented passionately by James, a true fan of the sport, and all written in beautiful prose. James also tells the narrative of his political life, writing about the importance of West Indian self-governance and how cricket mirrored the social politics of Trinidad at the time. There were many overlaying threads of narrative throughout the book which gave it textural depth and the honesty of James throughout lends weight to his words.Highly recommended

The master of the arts writes of cricket in his generation as a West Indian with a beautifully composed history of the game and the undercurrent of political uncertainty for men of colour.

More than a cricket book. Interweaves the arts, social and political conditions with the emergence of West Indies cricket. Will be enjoyed by all those who appreciate the role of sport, and cricket in particular, in influencing and reflecting the society in which it takes place.

absolutely love clr james. this and the black jacobins are classics.

Unforgettable. Well written. This is a "Great Book."

A very good cricket, , which offerrs a facinaring insight into West Indian society in the colonial era

ok

I already owned a copy of this book, but decided to get another copy for a dear friend and his wife so that they could finally get a sense of the politics and societal influences that make the game of cricket more than just a game to so many - not least of all the people of the Caribbean. A fascinating mix of history, autobiographical elements and elegant prose!

The Book of Massage: The Complete Step-by-Step Guide to Eastern and Western Technique

Amazon.com Review

With more than 650,000 copies sold, massage therapist Lucinda Lidell's Book of Massage has been updated with new photos and instructional drawings. Not for the prudish, as the subjects in most of the photos are completely in the buff, the book presents an intense, information-packed, step-by-step guide to traditional massage, shiatsu, and reflexology. No matter which method you choose to focus on (you're advised to choose one at a time), Lidell is thorough in her explanations of the strokes and techniques necessary to give relaxing, therapeutic massage in the privacy of your own home. Detailed drawings, diagrams, and photographs help to further demonstrate how to address each individual body part. Divided into distinct chapters for each of the three methods, The Book of Massage also includes several sections that Lidell stresses are fundamental to all types of massage. The first is "Beginning," with information such as creating the right atmosphere (a warm room and soft lighting), applying oil, and finding a comfortable position. Additionally, Lidell suggests that everyone should review sections on the human touch and anatomy, both of which oddly come at the end of the book. As thorough as The Book of Massage may be, do not expect to walk away from it an expert. As with any skill worth learning, giving good massage takes time, study, and practice, practice, practice. --Bree Altman

This is an amazing book. It gave me a whole new outlook on massage and how valuable it is for body maintenance and health in general. There is a lot of intimacy within this practice (hence why massage parlors make the headlines all the time). It's quite beautiful and sensuous, but also very methodical and healthy. I bought this for my husband due to his many RA joint ailments. Additionally it alleviates his stress and helps him to disassociate from his rough day at work. It helps to reduce the inflammation in his knees, elbows, ankles and wrists. The book is very extensive and covers everything, from the actual concept of massage and the many variations available. It also covers reflexology and trigger therapy. So much information that has been well sought out and researched. Excellent illustrations with step-by-step guidance for beginners. I highly recommend this book if you want to not only get closer to your companion, but share in an art that is truly intense and binding.

Over the years I have read numerous books on health, fitness, energy healing, Zen, Taoism and various massage systems. I must say that this amazing book (The Book of Massage: The complete step-by-step guide to Eastern and western techniques by Lucinda Lindell), which I purchased on Amazon for a bargain price, is one of the very best books ever written on this subject. This 192 page large size soft cover book covers in detail three systems of massage: massage, Shiatsu and reflexology. The beautiful photographs and illustrations make this an excellent reference source for anyone interested in learning the basic principles of massage, Shiatsu and reflexology. It is essential to understand that these techniques are best learned from any instructor to fully comprehend each of the techniques presented in this volume. The value of this book can be fully appreciated when combined with hands on practice and training. The unique book covers the following material: Beginning information, massage methods, Shiatsu techniques, Reflexology techniques for feet and hands, the human touch, body reading and anatomy. If you are interested in massage techniques and systems this is a MUST BOOK to have in your personal library.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Chair/Seated Use of the Martial Arts ring, bamboo and metal, for seniors and the physically challenged)

My wife wanted this to try out on me; wow! Very informative and educational. Talk somebody into reading this and trying the steps on you. Seriously feels amazing and save the extra money to take them to a well deserved meal. Worth every penny and more. Amazing results.

Easy to read, not too complicated, and I LOVE the retro photos - really adds character to the book. My boyfriend has commented that my massages are better now, and I find myself going for about an hour just to try out everything I've learned.

Okay, unless you are easily offended, the nudity isn't that bad in this book. Yes it is frequent, but it isn't sexualized, it is just bodies. It had good information for people unfamiliar with massage that just want to give better massages to their loved ones.

Much of what this book contains I already new but I was not sure if I was doing it correctly. The book has taught me I taught myself well and so it is now a refresher and reminder of the techniques I developed. A great read. I did not give it five stars for it references items and these items are located further in the book. This is tedious since I only have it on my Kindle.

Bought this book for my girl friend and I to start learning so we can give each other massages. It is more than I expected. A great instructional manual and includes information that the sensual massage books tend to leave out. If you don't know anything about massage and you are looking for more than just the basics this book will provide what you are looking for.

I love massage technique books. This one is a good step by step guide. I have owned it for years!

Great source for java text proccessing

This is an essential reference book for Java developers working with text data. It covers in detail the arcane world of character encodings and ends with how to setup Lucene/SOLR search engines. Java's character and string classes are thoroughly explained. There is coverage of Java I/O, regular expressions and common web formats like HTML, JSON etc as well. The code is clear with worked examples based on the Federalist papers which is pretty cool.

This is a very solid book that explains some of the techniques that I had been lacking, or just confused about. I recommend it as a staple for the Java developer.

Just about everyone who has read Desert Solitaire finds something (perhaps many somethings) in it they love. Just the same, they unearth plenty in the now half-century-old classic which they contend with or take offense to. Irvine takes Edward Abbey to task on some of the topics that so many of us have thought about or wanted to: Abbey's view on women, migrants (and/or immigration), and on the whole 'solitaire' notion. In Abbey's original Solitaire manuscript and his early journals, he was shown to have wife and child with him during one of his "seasons" in his little over-baked aluminum trailer in Arches; why no mention? Was 'solitaire' and solitude merely a portrayal, an image Abbey wished to uphold? In Cabal, Irvine points of that the idea of rugged individualism has, in some ways, gotten us into the absurd messes we western denizens have created and are now really beginning to wallow in. It takes a community, a cabal, to ultimately find solutions to these man-made messes, or to do anything else for that matter. (Abbey, of course, did appreciate what early Mormon settlers, as a community, accomplished.)Irvine does a fabulous job of presenting these rebuttals in a series of chapter-by-chapter essays, though they are not strictly rebuttals. (For some strange reason it's easy to agree with Abbey while disagreeing with him, as Irvine continually alludes to; we are all multi-sided, paradoxical individuals in a growing group of paradoxical individuals.) In addition, Irvine tells some of her story, but not to the point the book loses its focus. I really enjoyed this book! At fewer than 100 pages, it's a fairly straightforward read---straightforward, as in easy to read in one sitting---and can be re-read and studied in greater depth. There's a lot in it, for such a diminutive work. I wish it was longer!

I'd been anticipating this book for some time. Although the actual reading was basically pleasing, and Irvine can certainly create a really good sentence, this offering falls short of the mark insofar as what was promised in all its marketing hype. Admittedly it's been many years since I read Desert Solitaire, so I need to do that, then perhaps re-read this brief volume immediately afterward for another comparison. But this slim book left me wishing there was more to it.Taking Abbey to task in each chapter was admirable yet also felt somewhat rote, and Irvine's own personal history does not encompass all that the stunning desert wildlands encompass. While I appreciate her own historical link to the land—in terms of her Utah Mormon ancestry—being able to inform her viewpoint in a different manner than Abbey, it lacked a wider view that I think is necessary in this age. More people come to these places now from somewhere else, seeking solace or quiet or respite or simple beauty that does not exist back wherever they call home. Although I do understand those who have claimed Utah as their homeland for a few generations now feeling possessive or closer to it than those who arrived later, I'm also tired of them. They do not hold the only claim to these places. I realize she gets that, she knows that, yet for me it was too much of her own background to read about. While I also realize she can only tell her own story from her own viewpoint, I suppose I'm simply wishing for a more overarching text about Abbey's country...Amy's country...our wild sandstone and canyon red rock country. Maybe it's also that I don't like whiskey, or guns, in the backcountry, that somewhat turned me off. Her revelations about her own history are risky, vulnerable, and for that I laud her. She was using the Abbey model, the model of all personal essays, of bringing oneself into the landscape and the text. It is brave, and for that, I toast her with a raised glass of whatever one's beverage of choice might be.Yet with sublime words like these, I hoped for much more: “No longer can we be voyeurs, catching from scenic pullouts mere glimpses of the wild, uneven territory of our collective unconscious. The hour at hand demands that we molt all that we want and believe we know. Now we must slither — belly to stone — into the dens and burrows of our souls.” Yes, please. Our souls need more, so much more. Can someone please write a dense, rich, long, lusciously wandering yet tightly woven narrative about this topic of a season in the southern Utah wilderness? Gendered or not, rebuttal or not, pointed differences or not, that book still awaits creation out there somewhere. Maybe one day Irvine will be the one to pen it.

Depressing and negative, giving the exact opposite feeling you get after reading Desert Solitaire. Was hoping for an uplifting, updated, modern take on Abbey's classic. Instead we get attack after attack on Abbey's admittedly dated view on environmental issues, with nothing new offered in it's place, making this book a huge missed opportunity.

Pretty good little book. It raises some thoughtful criticism of Edward Abbey’s writings and the worldview that has proceeded from them. Definitively worth reading by Abbey’s fans.

I enjoyed the book, read it the first night I had it;thoughtful, entertaining

If ever a book about American public lands was regarded with reverence, it’s Edward Abbey’s Desert Solitude. Although I knew about it for years (and read his novel The Monkey Wrench Gang), I didn’t take on the sacred text until I first went to the Utah wilderness. A Moab bookseller recommended it along with Terry Tempest Williams’ Refuge, which I admired as much. But Williams didn’t confront the mystique of Abbey, who was dead and buried in the Arizona desert.Amy Irvine is not as polite. At a time when Moab is crawling with every kind of expensively clad wilderness adventurer, Irvine visits the place where Abbey’s ashes were buried and takes him on. She tells him how his worst expectations for the Utah desert and Arches National Park in particular have been far exceeded. And she blames not only the extraction industries but zealous environmentalists.Along with sharing stories about her wilderness experience, Irvine takes on Abbey for pretending to be alone, solitary, when often he was accompanied by one of his five (sequential) wives and his children. She informs him about the #metoo. Movement. And she lays down the reasons why being a woman alone in the wilderness is far more dangerous than for a solitary man. Yet like him, she finds the desert compelling and demanding, inspiring and treacherous. Like Abbey and her late father, she finds elation in risk. She is a worthy adversary. If you love Desert Solitude, you should read these essays. If you haven’t read Abbey’s book, buy them both.

Dictionary of Christianity and Science: The Definitive Reference for the Intersection of Christian Faith and Contemporary Science, by Christopher L. Reese

Review

Dictionaries are shaped by editors, and the editors of Dictionary of Christianity and Science have created a resource unlike anything available. Here the reader will find fair-minded summaries of crucial scientific categories, diverse viewpoints that will surely satisfy and dissatisfy everyone, sketches of schools of thought that become mini-classroom experiences, and a breadth of learning that demonstrates that evangelicalism is coming of age in the discussion about science and faith. Gone are old-fashioned dismissals of science in favor of the Bible. Instead, what we find is rigorous thinking about some of our faith’s most difficult challenges. Every Christian studying science will want a copy of Dictionary of Christianity and Science within arm’s reach. -- Scot McKnight, Julius R. Mantey Professor of New Testament, Northern SeminaryAs a pastor, I’m called to speak God’s word about God’s world to God’s people. This means connecting Scripture to a whole range of contemporary issues---many of which are outside the training or expertise of the pastor. As a result, I’m always on the lookout for resources to help me wisely shepherd my congregation. That’s why I’m thrilled to see the Dictionary of Christianity and Science. What pastor has the time to be up to speed on all the issues at the intersection of Christianity and science? Yet what pastor can avoid the need to have something thoughtful to say? Our congregations look to us for this kind of intellectual leadership---and this one-of-a-kind resource makes that job a whole lot easier. A wealth of articles on an array of topics, written with both scholarly acumen and pastoral grace. I can’t recommend this resource highly enough. -- Todd Wilson, Senior Pastor, Calvary Memorial ChurchThis is an invaluable resource that belongs in every Christian’s library. Pastors and others will find themselves consulting it frequently for its insightful and helpful entries. I will be keeping my copy close by when I’m writing. -- Lee Strobel, author of The Case for Christ; The Elizabeth and John Gibson Chair of Apologetics, Houston BaptistZondervan’s new Dictionary of Christianity and Science sparkles with passion, controversy, and diverse perspectives. Contributors cover the many intersections of Christianity and science, and the thinkers who work there. The embattled terrain of evangelicalism receives special emphasis, with contributions from competing thinkers. The result is an engaging, useful volume that belongs in the library of anyone thinking seriously about science and Christian belief. -- Karl Giberson, Professor of Science and Religion, Stonehill CollegeI am pleased to recommend this dictionary edited by Paul Copan, Tremper Longman, Chris Reese, and Michael Strauss. From the beginning article on Adam and Eve, it is clear that the editors have labored earnestly to include differing perspectives on many issues involving science and Christianity. Although I do not agree with every position, particularly theistic evolution, there is value in challenging readers to examine these issues carefully for themselves. -- Dr. Henry F. Schaefer III, Graham Perdue Professor of Chemistry, University of GeorgiaIn this unusual dictionary, over a hundred evangelical Christian scholars vigorously (and variously) defend biblical insights in dialogue with and confronting contemporary science (and scientism). From the early Genesis stories of creation, accepting Adam as historical and representative, to Darwinian natural history and genetics, to Jesus’s resurrection, to human nature seen theologically and in social science, here is conservative Christianity at its reasoned best. -- Holmes Rolston III, University Distinguished Professor, Colorado State UniversityZondervan’s Dictionary of Christianity and Science is an impressive resource that presents a broad range of topics from a broad tent of evangelical scholars. I appreciate that it often presents multiple views. For example, we find entries defending both old-earth and young-earth views of creation as well as one defending a historical Adam and Eve and one not so committed to that view. I look forward to having this reference work on my shelf. -- Michael R. Licona, Associate Professor of Theology, Houston Baptist UniversityBooks on the relationship of Christianity and science are, by their very nature, controversial, and this one will be no exception. However, the editors and authors have assembled a substantial amount of material on this topic, including not only terms and definitions but multiple-view discussions that explain various views on many of the more controversial subjects. The sheer number of terms, ideas, concepts, and discussions included in this dictionary make this book an extremely unique and helpful “first step” for anyone interested in the subjects included. This volume is the place to begin when questions dealing with the relationship of Christianity to science are broached. -- K. Scott Oliphint, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, PennsylvaniaScience and Christianity are the two great forces that have shaped the modern world. This wideranging dictionary offers thorough coverage of numerous points at which they have intersected historically, mapping the intellectual landscape. Any serious reader who turns to it for reference or for more thorough study will learn a great deal. -- Timothy McGrew, Professor and Chairman, Department of Philosophy, Western Michigan UniversitySince the mid-1990s, an exciting development has arisen within scholarly circles of what many people have termed the “New Academic Dialogue between Science and Religion.” There has been a dramatic increase in the number of books moving away from the common perception that modern scientific discoveries and Christian faith are entrenched in a never-ending conflict. The Dictionary of Christianity and Science is a welcome addition to this growing body of literature. The excellent selection of entries covers all the major topics and debates that are relevant today. The remarkably clear writing style and balanced presentation of differing views make this dictionary accessible to both specialists in the field and the general public. I am certain that this dictionary will serve the church for many years in leading many to demonstrate that modern science can glorify our Creator and honor his creation. -- Denis O. Lamoureux, Associate Professor of Science and Religion, St. Joseph’s College, University of AlbertaI am very grateful to the editors and contributors for this incredible resource. They have wisely sought advocates of the differing positions and have throughout sought to be comprehensive, informative, and, above all, fair. “Dictionary” is too humble a label for what this is! I anticipate that this will offer valuable guidance for Christian faithfulness. -- C. John Collins, Professor of Old Testament, Covenant Theological Seminary

Overall, this is a very impressive resource, with well-written articles, every one of which includes “References and Recommended Reading.”Therefore, I was a bit surprised at what wasn’t included, such as an Index that would let the reader know that Theistic Evolution was to be foundunder Evolutionary Creation, which is reasonable, except that there is no cross-reference to let the reader know. Also, an Index to the Multiple-Views Discussions would have been a helpful and easy-to-create addition to the Dictionary.Multiple-Views Discussions included, among others, Adam and Eve, the Age of the Universe, Young and Old Earth Creationism, the Days of Creation, Evolutionary Creationism, the Fossil Record, the Genesis Flood, and Hominid Fossils. I was therefore surprised to see so little discussion of other current hot-button Christianity and Science issues like Information and Intelligent Design (one very short article each, both by William Dembski, with no multiple-view response), and Original Sin (one page).Despite these shortcomings, I recommend this book to anyone interested in the Christianity and Science dialogue.Another similar, though much smaller, book that does include both a List of Entries and an Index is "A Science and Religion Primer," edited by Heidi Campbell & Heather Looy (Baker Academic, 2009).

The Dictionary covers a lot of ground and topics. But while it purports to survey widely and fairly from a broad range of viewpoints and opinions, in reality the editors produced a rather imbalanced book. This is particularly true in areas discussing creation-evolution topics, which feature prominently in the book (for example, 12 of the 15 multi-view entries relate to creation issues). In numerous entries, attacks are made on young-Earth creation ideas or organizations. For example, the entry for the Institute for Creation Research is written by the same author who contributes the entry for the anti-creation National Center for Science Education. The differing treatment of these two organizations is stark: I'CR's entry is almost seething, and the word "ridiculed" is used TWICE for ICR. In contrast, the NCSE is written as one would expect for a dictionary entry: polite and factual. The fact that the editors 1) chose a partisan for the NCSE to write ICR's bio; and 2) allowed ICR to be treated so poorly is highly problematic. The editors apparently didn't care about fairness or decency in reporting.Similar instances can be found in numerous entries. Right after a two-views set on Noah's Flood (by a creationist paleontologist and a theistic evolutionist theologian...an odd pairing), there is another entry on Noah's Flood and geology by an old-Earth geologist lambasting a global flood. And there's a FOURTH entry on Noah's Flood in another spot on the dictionary (also attacking young-Earth creation), this time by one of the editors. In another area the same editor (a physicist) argues for Big Bang cosmology and is paired against a theologian arguing for a young universe. That's just strange. Shouldn't the experts be at least in similar fields for the multi-point entries???And so it goes. I could bring up many missed biographies of important people and strange entries of others who've had minimal impact on Christianity and science. Or the fact that there are ZERO entries on "Christianity" but a bunch on "Science". There's very, very little on current species loss, environmental issues (just one multi-view entry on athropogenic climate change), and surprisingly few in bioethics, GMOs, or a host of other relevant topics.Bottom line: missed opportunity for Zondervan.Pros:Many current scholars involvedLots of topics coveredCons:No table of contentsNo indexExcluded authorsImproper pairings for multi-point viewsSome entries allowed to be agenda-driven

Outstanding and interesting, enough content to satisfy both the academic and the amateur. This volume includes articles on a variety of topics, and often provides varying viewpoints for those issues about which educated people who are committed to the Bible as God's Word honestly disagree. Highly recommended.

Articles are too brief. Wish they were like the "black" Bible dictionaries by IVP press. Expected much more.

Great book

Excellent resource dictionary.
