It's incredible that Chilson manages to convey the entire culture of Niger (as well as incidental discussions of its history during French colonialism) through his reporting of his travels with several bush taxi drivers and how they manage their lives and the lives of their passengers on the road. Americans often think that we live in a car culture and have a love/hate relationship with our overdependency on cars. I challenge anyone to read this book and not come away thinking that traffic problems and reckless driving in our country are at best inconveniences compared to the literal hell in Niger. Here is a country where a highway patrol is manned by the military and is funded almost entirely through bribes extorted at road checks; where automobiles are literally pieced together with wreckage from the hundreds of near daily, fiery crashes that seem to line the Nigerien roads the way weeds and garbage line our highways; where talismans to ward off the road demons that lurk in the night are carried by everyone - not out of superstition - but in an earnest belief that one may not make it to the end of one's journey without them. Utterly fascinating, expertly and cleanly written, this book is an eye-opening reading experience.

This book was very disappointing indeed. Niger is a large country, but the author only rode a few short stretches on the only real highway at the Southern border. Niger is endless sand dunes with tiny water holes that are tough to find. It has ghost towns and the salt oasis of Bilma. It has small oases where the people never saw a doctor and where children will die from infections when they step on an acacia thorn. It is a land of camel caravans where natives get lost and die in the desert. And where, in the mountains, live the blue men of the desert, the Tuaregs. On the desert sands, you can find fish skeletons. And in Agadez you see the world's oldest mosque and can shake hands with the sultan. And where was the author? Nowhere in sight of the real Niger.Forget it.

Simply put, this guide and the separate complementary workbook works when nothing else does! After failing remedial college pre-algebra classes multiple times, I was desperate. I had As in almost all other courses and knew I was just somehow missing something that would unlock the understanding for me. I tried several workbook methods and stumbled across this one a few years ago. I fell in love immediately when I started "getting" it on the first few pages of problems. He explains with super simple instructions how to understand problems (the "why" is included, which is missing from many textbooks). I worked through all the lessons/assignments until they were in my mental "muscle memory", then went and took my Math placement exams again at University of Houston. I tested straight into College Algebra! I cried and called my brother right on the spot. I was 40 years old and had finally gotten Algebra. This unlocked the part of my brain I needed to use to finally succeed and really made it easier than I ever thought it could be. So grateful for this amazing workbook and method of learning! Thank you Josh!

As a math challenged homeschooling mom of three I wish I had discovered this book before my third trip down Algebra Lane. It would have saved hours of tears and frustration lost in a maze of Algebraic computations. I am now going through the book daily with Kid 3 who has struggled with math since the 4th grade and we are both GETTING IT (I realize that all caps are impolite in type but I do, in fact, feel like shouting our results from the rooftops)! Our hour of math a day is not a struggle, we do not avoid sitting down to do Algebra and most importantly my son is gaining confidence in his ability to do math. Mr. Rappaport deserves some sort of humanitarian award for his book and has earned my undying gratitude. My only regret in this purchase is that I didn't make it years ago.

I asked my older son to spend a 10 min a day during early middle. I explained the goal is to understand the concept. Spend more time reading and confirm by solving only a few questions. No reason to repeat 100 times. He got it, and he understood how to teach himself from book. He is now straight A student with all AP classes. More subjects and pages to go through every day, but he is used to it, and know how to do it.My 10 years old found the book in bookshelf. He is doing 2 pages a day even though I haven't told him to do it yet. He likes that he can teach himself.

I have been homeschooling my dyslexic and gifted daughters for the past 4 years and this is the best math curriculum we've found. The descriptions and step by step explanations guide the student on a comfortable stroll through the forest of Algebra. Each piece is covered carefully with several example problems to test your understanding on every page. My dyslexic daughter has found the descriptions, paired with the examples, especially the funny non-number examples to be easy to understand. This is a first for any math curriculum we have done, and this is far more complex material than what we have covered previously.Some steps seems to be too small, but then we just move on. Some take extra practice, which is where the matching work book comes in handy. We will also use the added workbook this summer, after she has completed the book, to review and keep the ideas fresh.The other oddity for this math book and it's matching workbook is, we haven't found a single mistake. Actually we found one grammatical mistake, but it didn't change the meaning, and in the literally hundreds of exercises we've done, not one has had an incorrect answer supplied by the guide. This is a first - even from the texts we were allowed to use from the schools we consistently find mistakes, some of which are confusing to the lesson.

A helpful reference. The book is written in a conversational tone (question and answer format) with helpful tips to understand algebra concepts. The book is divided into 13 content sections, including an introduction, properties and sets of numbers, positive and negative numbers, order of operations, like terms, absolute value, exponents and radicals, factoring, cancelling, solving equations, coordinate plane, and word problems. Most of the book is set up with one or two pages devoted to a quick lesson with clear explanations and examples, followed by a few sample questions for you to try. Common pitfalls are usually addressed in each lesson as well. This newer addition includes advanced word problems and some style changes in the last part of the book that were not a part of the original book.There is a chart showing alignment to Common Core State Standards, a helpful glossary, and an index as well.

This guide is brilliant, especially for teens struggling to understand the purpose of adding, subtracting, and multiplying letters? What? I thought math was about numbers? The author has put the rules in a fun(ny) style to make learning Algebra concepts easier for kids and adults alike. That makes a world of difference in the frustration factor of trying to figure out what Algebra is all about. Thank you Josh, for helping to make math more fun for my son and myself, he is home schooled, because he has dyscalculia, and really struggles with math concepts and memorization. Now he has this quick reference guide to help him through some of his struggles with Algebra.

Dr. Zhang received the Early Career Award from the International Journal of Nanomedicine, the John Haddad Young Investigator Award by American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award by the Oak Ridge Associated Universities Organization, Joukowsky Family Foundation Outstanding Dissertation Award at Brown and the Sigma Xi Award. Dr. Zhang’s research areas include 3D bioprinting, nanobiomaterials, complex tissue engineering, stem cell engineering, drug delivery and breast cancer bone metastasisDr. Fisher is the Director of the Tissue Engineering and Biomaterials Laboratory and investigates biomaterials, stem cells, and bioreactors for the regeneration of lost tissues, particularly bone, cartilage, vasculature, and skeletal muscle. The lab is supported by research grants from NIH, FDA, NSF, and other institutions, and has produced approximately 90 publications, 200 scientific presentations, and 8 patents. Dr. Fisher has been the research advisor to 11 Ph.D. students, 3 M.S. students, and over 50 undergraduate researchers. In 2012 Dr. Fisher was elected Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. Dr. Fisher is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Tissue Engineering, Part B: Reviews, and in 2014 will co-chair the TERMIS-AM Meeting in Washington, DCDr. Leong has published over 280 peer-reviewed research manuscripts and owns more than 50 issued patents. His work has been recognized by a Young Investigator Research Achievement Award of the Controlled Release Society, Distinguished Scientist Award of the International Journal of Nanomedicine, and Clemson Award for Applied Research of the Society for Biomaterials. For any 1L (or lawyer), this is an INCREDIBLE real property supplement. I learned so much through the plain language and straightforward layout. I read every single page, so I can honestly say that it is completely worth it. Property is complicated, and vocabulary is imperative to understand, and this book does a great job teaching (and reminding) you of what everything means.

1L in law school? Need a refresher for the bar? Confuddled by property? Try this. I got one for Contracts and it was amazing. This one is no different.

This is not a required book for 1L property at University of Wyoming, College of Law....BUT! It makes a HUGE difference. Easier to follow the class and understand the elements of the concepts! Professor Romero is a great teacher and this book makes understanding difficult concepts very easy!

I am a Firefighter/Paramedic who teaches on Firefighter Behavioral Health and Suicide Awareness. I also deal with man tragedies of my own through work and just day to day life. This book is an amazing book teaching on ways to help yourself so you can continue to help others. It also gives many amazing testimonials that touch deeply to the soul. This book is great for Police, Fire, EMS, and I would think Doctors and Nurses as well. I bought this book used and it came in great condition. One last thing, remember that you are STRONGEST when you can recognize the need for help!

This book is a must read for any first responder in my opinion. I attended a presentation by the author and both it and the book are very informative. I didn't understand why I was having some of the feelings I was having or what to do about them and how to help myself. After reading this book I have a better understanding. It really explains how the stress affects our bodies and gives ways to help.

Borrowing heavily from the themes in Gilmartin's "Emotional Survival," Bulletproof Spirit is well written and laid out, particularly in the important areas of warning signs of emotional distress, the signs and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the efficacy of peer support programs. The limitations of peer support programs, particularly when it comes to "confidentiality," are explained well. The text is punctuated with excellent stories of critical incident trauma survivors, although the book unfortunately makes only brief reference to "cumulative" trauma among first responders. The dangers and types of maladaptive coping techniques are clearly laid out. Considerable emphasis is placed on an interesting program called "Beyond Survival Toward Officer Wellness" (or BeSTOW), an FBI program endorsed by the International Association of Chiefs of Police and which serves as an example of planning for a departmental wellness program, including peer support, an employee assistance program, a chaplaincy program and physical fitness standards.The book endorses the "Mitchell Model" of critical incident stress debriefing, a topic that is now under considerable debate--some maintain that more harm than good is done to the potentially traumatized victim.Of particular interest in Bulletproof Spirit, however, is its encouragement of annual "mental health checkups," by which an officer seeks out and visits a therapist once a year to review the past year, see what has worked and what hasn't, and plan for the next year. This is, perhaps, the most significant part of the book and is crucial to first responders in these critical times. Waiting until one actually "needs help" is simply too late.Some may find the book's passages on spirituality, faith, God and prayer to be somewhat uncomfortable, but the author attempts to couch these teachings in a "universal" manner. Similarly, the book focuses on the role of chaplains in the emergency services, noting their required credentials and training while emphasizing their benefits to first responders in terms of confidentiality.All in all, Bulletproof Spirit is a "good read" for those working (or retired) as first responders.

Captain Dan Willis has written a solid career survival manual for all First Responders by providing a long over-due guide in placing strategic "resilience kevlar" over the real human emotions which all too often morph into accumulative compassion fatigue. Exceptionally readable, thought provoking and spot-on. Should be required reading for all First Responders, Field Training Officers and the bosses.

I first ran across the “CornBread Mafia” while doing research for my own book regarding the ‘MachTenn Conspiracy’, a sister event which took place in Tennessee at the same time as was the investigation into Johnny Boone, and the rest of the Marion County boys.From my own personal research and experience I know the subject matter which was chronicled in this book to be true, and precise. The ‘CornBread Mafia’ is a compelling read for anyone interested in the Marijuana sub-culture, or ‘true crime’ stories in general.James Higdon lays out the story brick by brick, plant by plant, dollar for dollar in a fluid and descriptive manner, with literary skills that would make even the most competent word-smith envious.As I read the book I was immersed into the life of the Northern Kentucky dope grower as he stood in a cornfield tending some of the best Mary-Jane this country has to offer. I felt what it was like to walk in their shoes so much so that I actually wanted to be one, and were it not for the fact that I would have to bust myself in the mouth to understand what it was like trying to eat corn off the cob with no teeth, I would have. As I stepped from page to page on this journey through the world of Marijuana and Moonshine, it was almost like I could smell a freshly rolled joint smoking crisply between my fingers; oh wait, that was a freshly rolled joint smoking crisply between my fingers, lol.It was part history, part comedy, with a few streaks of insanity so well compiled that it will leave you staggering like George Jones taking a sobriety test.It was an informative, well written, historically based book which will give you a good look into the life of a Marijuana distributor in the great state of Kentucky, a state where the only thing higher than the taxes, are the citizens.

Hands down, James Higdon's "Cornbread Mafia" is one of the best true crime books I've ever read, bringing to life the colorful history of Marion County and its metamorphosis from dissident Catholic enclave to moonshiner's and bootlegger's central to the place that made American pot synonymous with Kentucky Bluegrass.In this respect, the book is less an examination of a particular criminal or criminal cartel, but instead a cultural history of a particular place and its peculiar brand of crime. Although the central figures of "Cornbread Mafia" are marijuana gang chieftans Johnny Boone, Bobby Joe Shewmaker, and Jimmy Bickett, Higdon's real strength is laying out the two century history of Marion County. In doing so, the author vividly creates for the reader a culture that fostered outlaws with a insular, backcountry code of silence that would put even the Mafia in their heyday to shame. Another major treat is the intersection with characters of "the Bluegrass Conspiracy"The book is not without its warts (a DC-3 is a twin-engined place, for example, not four), but these are minor and are not what some reviewers chose to focus on. I've read a few comments about how this book is for "Kentucky insiders," a claim I reject with prejudice. While I am a Kentuckian, I wonder if those readers would say the same thing about such a colorful cultural history of crime in Staten Island, NYC or the South Side of Chicago. Their beef isn't with the lively and detailed background provided by Higdon, but with its unfamiliar rural setting. Basically, they are complaining about being shown a new and different place, so one wonders why they are reading this or any book in the first place!Do you like true crime books about colorful neighborhoods or syndicates? Buy this book. Are you a Kentuckian who wants to learn more about one of the most interesting criminal episodes of modern history? Buy this book. It reads like a true crime version of "Justified."

Everyone else should enjoy it too, but for the above it is a must read. Those from small towns, the country over, can relate to this story; however, this is special. Many in the community were raising and selling a high-grade marijuana. They saw little wrong with growing pot, as it was not "Gods law," but a man-made law.The author is well equipped to tell the story as his father owned a local store. He names the people evolved and tells their story with relish.Evidently, some of the town's people do not care much for the story, as someone highjacked the first load of books heading to market. Do not miss it. I do not know the author nor have I ever met him, but I loved his book.

A very interesting book particularly for those who know this area of Kentucky. When legal, Kentucky was a center of hemp production in the United States. It's warm and humid climate is particularly suited to this plant and it's sisterMarijuana. The members of the so called Corn Bread Mafia were just regular folks who lost the jobs and found another way to make money becoming one of the largest suppliers in the US. This brought the wrath of the federal government and begs the question of why not try de criminalization. In fact Kentucky should at least consider permitting the cultivation of marijuana for export to States who permit medical and full use of this plant. Ky would go from a major illegal producer to legal status. This is the replacement of tobacco as the main cash crop and save many family farms.Please excuse my personal views and enjoy this read.

I purchased t his book because I was told about it and I was born in Kentucky. My cousin was engaged to a City Manager of Kentucky and he was Mafia. I've always been very interested in this way of life and the book was an excellent piece of information in which I enjoyed very much. The backwoods Kentucky people are to be treated respectively. They have their ways in dealing with people who do not respect them, and since there isn't much employment in certain areas, they are going to make their money any way they can. In some ways I can understand that. I grew up poor, however, my dad worked four jobs to keep a roof over our heads. I really enjoyed the book, others should, too. It's full of info about the way of living with these very special farm people! I loved the book! I'm ordering more books of the Kentucky Mafia.
