Best book to get helpful advice from, in my opinion. Recommended by my dad who has been in the auto business his whole life. My son has a 95 Honda Civic that has been having problems here and there. This book will help find answers. Very detailed.

Chilton manuals are not known for being the most comprehensive on the block. Any manual that describes the re-assembly of a drive train as the opposite of dis-assembly is not professional grade at all times. That said, it is the "pro-consumer" book of choice regardless of which car it is covering.We bought this addition for the Del Sol information, and while we know that the Del Sol and the Civic share a good deal of their build design, a few more photo's of the Del Sol and the location of it's parts would have been helpful.Useful as car care manual, it will live on our shelf for the basic maintenance jobs like spark plug replacement, oil and belt changes, and things as audacious as replacing the radiator or brake system. Just about anything except for the drive train and wiring harness.

It's a chilton's. It does a decent job, dont get this thinking you are going to get involved electrical wiring diagrams, its all surface level.

I ordered this manual with some simple repairs in mind for a "beater" 1995 Civic I just purchased. I have ended up following this manual for two major repairs, and have successfully stopped an oil burning problem, with the benefit of having improved fuel mileage at least 25%! Everything on my vehicle is just as described in the book, and repairs done for $0 labor costs.

The best step by step repair book for the Honda. This coupled with a true honda service manual (rarely needed with the Chilton) makes a great combo.

It's a Chilton Manual. Definately better than nothing. In combination with the Haynes you can probably either figure out the easiest way to do a procedure, or decide not to try.

This book is loaded with good information on restoring an old car. It has some information on repairing collision damage,but the focus is really on doing great paint jobs on older cars including replacing rusted body panels. Rust proofing,materials, techniques are all covered. This book also suggests where you can buy something and what to buy - useful information.There is a chapter on fiberglass (Corvette) bodies also. I would certainly give it 5 stars if it were not for the old black andwhite photos used. In the photos it is difficult to see what is going on.I think someone with limited experience painting cars would greatly benefit, although I am not sure I would recommend itto someone who knows nothing about auto body repair and painting.

I found the information in this book to be lacking in sufficient detail for a novice. It is written from a point of view as if the reader should already know the details of the subject matter. Black and white photographs throughout. A much better book is "How to Paint Your Car: Revised and Updated" from Motorbooks Workshop.

I like doing car repair but am a total novice at body work. I was looking for a book that covers all the basics with clear instructions for newbies like myself. although I have not started any of my planned projects yet, This looks like it will be the perfect resource to guide me through the process. Very complete on materials, sources, techniques, potential problems and more.

I found this book well written and informative for me, a beginner in body repair and painting. It covered most facets of body repair and painting. It's not an encyclopedia - for instance, the author mentions "slapping" and what it is used for, but doesn't delve into how to do it - perhaps that would be best for a book on metal working. All in all, this was just the ticket for me to touch upon all the subjects.

Good book

Really helpful for my study of early monastic writings (rules in particular). I was writing a paper on what influenced St. Benedict's Rule.

This is a fascinating look at what one saint believed were the core concepts of any successful and authentic monastic community. Though I'm no monk nor Christian, I deeply appreciate the wisdom which Saint Augustine shared in his vision.

The Rule is amazingly brief and unexpectedly vague. Commentary is certainly necessary, but this is really too much, and too dense.

I really enjoyed walking through the history and this story. It was done very well and the paintings were great. I would recommend this book to any futrue or past dancer.

I didn't read the book, and wouldn't have been able to without a magnifying glass. It should not be available as a Kindle book as the pages are 'graphics' instead of 'text' and are illegibly small.

I l like how they used different types of poetry and lots of onomonopiea . This really helped to bring along a journey with Alicia and feel what it was like to be a ballerina.

Alicia Alonso is a fascinating subject. Passionate about dance as a young child, she soared to great heights in the world of ballet. Even when hampered by visual impairments and eventually blindness, she danced magnificently. Dedicating herself to her craft, she was instrumental in advancing classical dance in Cuba by teaching, choreographing and performing. In a profession where most retire early, she continued until she was seventy-four. Although her return to Cuba when Castro took power caused her to be vilified in the West, it did not diminish her status as a prima ballerina.The art work in this book is attractive, capturing the beauty and grace of the ballet. My one gripe is the illustration of her swirling about as a child of five depict a girl clearly older by five. But all the illustrations are superb. I found the picture on page 19 depicting her with her boyfriend especially appealing.Unfortunately, the exuberance of the illustrations is tempered by the life sucking prose. It is dry, boring and at times inappropriate for the intended age group. Why highlight her father's comment that ballerinas are prostitutes? The author could have indicated that he objected and focused on her courage in following her dream. Why mention that she was impregnated before marriage? Isn't it enough to say that she married and had a child? The author fails to inject any emotion in her narrative. When Alicia and her husband have the opportunity to go on tour, they send their young daughter to live in Cuba with her grandparents. This is said flatly, without emotion. Surely this was a difficult decision, a sacrifice for the art. But it seemed no more heart-rending than packing your winter sweaters away for the season. This author tends to politicize everything. The page long anti- Battista rant was unnecessary especially when the author chose to ignore the oppressive regimes that replaced it. Alonso was committed to her craft and her country, fair enough. She was also afforded freedoms and privileges that her countrymen were not. Instead of an unbalanced political detour, I would have preferred focus on her career. Bottom line, great illustrations, flat footed prose.

This is the third "children's" book I've read by author Carmen T. Bernier-Grand. As in Diego: Bigger Than Life and Cesar: Si, se puede! / Yes, We Can Cesar, she does a nice job of providing biographical information about larger-than-life people. While I thought she did a great job with Cesar, this book is, like Diego, marred by her inability (or refusal) to censor herself for her audience. Perhaps there is a bit of me that is more prurient than I'd realized before reviewing children's books, but I object to her use of the word "prostitute" in explaining why Alicia Alonso's father thought that ballet was a scandalous impression. This book is marketed to 9-12 year old's, but it's cover and subject matter is going to appeal to younger kids. I don't want to have to explain to my seven-year-old what a prostitute is. Sure, there is the underlying message that the father is wrong, but I just don't think the "poetry" in this book is written well enough to excuse the language.That being said, I have to also say that I didn't find this book to be beautifully written. It is quite informative and gives readers a detailed account of who Alicia Alonso was and how family pressures, love, and politics affected her as a dancer. However, though each page is meant to be read as a separate poem which chronicles her life, I found that it was only "poetry" in the way in which it was formatted. I can't see myself recommending this to anyone.

In this vivid exploration of road culture in the West African nation of Niger, Chilson describes a crucial aspect of African culture as a whole: the bush taxi, or "taxi brousse." A year spent taking journeys in this most common form of transportation in Africa leads Chilson further inside modern Africa than an earnest anthropologist would get, not least because of the danger involved. The people of West Africa abhor an empty Peugeot 504. The rickety old station wagons with balding tires, no windows and engines held together by a wing and a prayer gather at chaotic motor parks where they wait until at least 10 passengers are crammed aboard before taking off. These bush taxis are the great social leveler, since people from all walks of life use them. Auto accidents, horrendous and frequent, are a leading cause of death in Africa. Stationed along all routes are "checkpoints" manned by aggressive soldiers who expect bribes, the cost of which is factored in to the passengers' fare. Little wonder that a fatalistic belief in the "demons" of the road dominates the driversAa set of beliefs that also draws in the author, whose own fear is assuaged by amulets and, on occasion, numb withdrawal. There is an unrelenting quality to the excellent descriptive writing, appropriate perhaps because of the unrelenting life, but readers will hunger for more humor and better characterizations of the people the author met. I read this mostly out of interest in Niger. It does offer some remarkable perspectives on Nigerien bush transport and life in general, but the verbiage is sometimes overwrought

It's incredible that Chilson manages to convey the entire culture of Niger (as well as incidental discussions of its history during French colonialism) through his reporting of his travels with several bush taxi drivers and how they manage their lives and the lives of their passengers on the road. Americans often think that we live in a car culture and have a love/hate relationship with our overdependency on cars. I challenge anyone to read this book and not come away thinking that traffic problems and reckless driving in our country are at best inconveniences compared to the literal hell in Niger. Here is a country where a highway patrol is manned by the military and is funded almost entirely through bribes extorted at road checks; where automobiles are literally pieced together with wreckage from the hundreds of near daily, fiery crashes that seem to line the Nigerien roads the way weeds and garbage line our highways; where talismans to ward off the road demons that lurk in the night are carried by everyone - not out of superstition - but in an earnest belief that one may not make it to the end of one's journey without them. Utterly fascinating, expertly and cleanly written, this book is an eye-opening reading experience.

This book was very disappointing indeed. Niger is a large country, but the author only rode a few short stretches on the only real highway at the Southern border. Niger is endless sand dunes with tiny water holes that are tough to find. It has ghost towns and the salt oasis of Bilma. It has small oases where the people never saw a doctor and where children will die from infections when they step on an acacia thorn. It is a land of camel caravans where natives get lost and die in the desert. And where, in the mountains, live the blue men of the desert, the Tuaregs. On the desert sands, you can find fish skeletons. And in Agadez you see the world's oldest mosque and can shake hands with the sultan. And where was the author? Nowhere in sight of the real Niger.Forget it.

About the Author

Born to a politically connected and aristocratic family between 428 and 423 B.C. , Plato received a good standard of education at an early age, and was able to immerse himself in the intellectual community of Ancient Athens. It was in the Academy that Plato would instruct and apprentice Aristotle, who was to go on to gain renown as a philosopher and scholar. Owing to his reputation Plato was hired by Dion, whose nephew Dionysus II was the rightful ruler of Sicily - Dion wished his nephew to receive a good education in the art of sound and wise governance. However Dionysus II became suspicious and accused both Plato and Dion of conspiracy - after some time spent under arrest, Plato returned to his homeland. In his late period, Plato continued to tutor and mentor the best young minds of Athens, and he would perish around 348 B.C. having lived beyond the age of eighty. Today Plato's legacy remains lauded: the philosopher ably used logic and reason to imbue insight on democratic governance, while developing a cohesive philosophy on topics such as art, metaphysics, justice and the 'Theory of Forms' - his iconic take on how ideas related to reality.

I'm trying to alternate between fun audiobooks and ones that I feel I should read rather than having any desire to do so. Plato's Republic was in that second group. I honestly expected to hate it. But it's one of the fundamental classics. So on the list it goes to listen to while I commute. And I loved it. It may have been that it was a full cast audio but it honestly did feel like being with a group. Maybe a quarter of the way in I realized what it reminded me of: when you are at a very mellow party in college and people start discussing things that are really "deep, man." And there's that one person who is way too into it and dominates the conversation. So that tickled me most of the book. The other thing that was really engaging was how much of the ideas in this book can be seen in the modern world. In that way it made it feel like an anthropological study and it kept making me say, "neat," even when I disagreed with whatever point was being made. Overall I would recommend this audiobook version because it made it come alive.

Whew, that was an intense read! I gave five stars because after careful consideration I realized that Alan Blooms interpretive essay really helped me to understand the The Republic to a different degree. The first ten books are the shoes, the interpretive essay is the shoe lace and it ties all of it up very neatly. To read something over 2,000 years old that’s been translated from Ancient Greek is a task in itself, I commend this translations interpreter he did a stellar job. This book is Heavy and not a book you can just pick up and expect to read in a weekend, its not littered with images that create a perfect picture for you to burn thru, it’s page after page after page of thought, so it slows you down, a lot. Each page forces you to think about what you’re reading, sometimes you have ZERO Idea and that’s ok, that’s where Bloom’s Interpretive Essay comes in. To pick up this book and commit to finishing it is a Challenge I highly recommend, you’ll walk away a better person with a sense of accomplishment and more thoughtful mind. I’ve read over 200 books and I think it’s safe to say that this was the most challenging book I’ve ever put my mind too, if your looking for a challenge then you’ve found it. Happy reading 📖

While the book was written in 380 BCE it is, perhaps, more relevant today than at any time in its history. You would almost think that Plato had pulled a Dr. Who and transported himself to 2018 before sitting down to write. It couldn’t be more tailored to the political, social, and economic environment in which we currently find ourselves.Plato/Socrates use elenctic (i.e. Socratic) questioning to explore human happiness and the specific virtue of justice. Socrates believed: “by curing people of the hubris of thinking they know when they do not…makes them happier and more virtuous than anything else.”Socrates and his friends pursue this journey by defining the ideal city – Kallipolis—and its rulers and constitution, the idea being that truth is often easier to discern on a large scale (i.e. a city) that can then be applied on a smaller scale (i.e. the individual).The debate focuses on the four virtues of an ideal city—wisdom, courage, temperance, and justice. And results in the conclusion that the human soul is made up of three parts—the appetitive, spirited, and rational—and that virtue, ultimately proven to be the source of happiness exists when the three are in balance and harmony.Socrates ultimately defines five political/economic models—philosopher/king, timocracy, oligopoly, democracy, and tyranny. And he ranks them, from good to bad, in the order listed, essentially arguing that they form an inverse ladder in which one inevitably deteriorates into the latter.That means, in essence, that oligopoly inevitably deteriorates into democracy, which he clearly doesn’t not hold in very high esteem. Freedom, by his logic, is unsustainable. In the simplest terms, the unfettered pursuit of freedom by everyone ultimately leads to conflict and that, in turn, inevitably leads to a race for power defined by manipulation, deception, and injustice.As a result, democracy inevitably leads to tyranny as the ruling class preys—quite deceitfully—on the fears of the masses that they, the masses, are being sidelined and their interests ignored. Sound familiar?The elenctic, commonly known as the Socratic method, has been largely stripped from our political and academic discourse. People are sure of what they know and don’t want to know anything else. The thirst for victory has, as a result, crushed the thirst for knowledge.There are many reasons for this. Technology, which gave rise to the echo chamber, has certainly contributed. Impatience has also played a big role. Elenctic takes time and our collective attention spans have dwindled to near nothing. Education, I believe Plato would say, however, is probably the real culprit. Oppression, sheltering, and victimization have replaced Plato’s definition of the ideal education: physical training, musical training (including prose and speech), mathematics, and dialectic.On the surface, critics will find no shortage of targets in the logic. More than anything else, however, both the argument and any criticism that might be drawn, reflect the imprecision of language itself and the difficultly this presents for philosophers willing to tackle the biggest and most relevant issues of life.That, however, simply reinforces Plato’s encouragement to ask more questions, listen more attentively with an open mind, and never assume you know the real answer. Which is why his ultimate encouragement it seems to me is not to admire things that are beautiful or just, but to truly understand what beauty and justice are. Sadly, I can think of no leader today who is doing anything even remotely close to that.Read it. It will make you a better leader, citizen, parent, friend, and person.

Plato’s Republic (Greek: Πολιτεία, Politeia; Latin: Res Publica) was written in 380 BC and this version was translated by Benjamin Jowett in 1871. It is a fiction book in the format of a discussion between Socrates and others. It aims to debate and conclusively determine the meaning of Justice. Socrates, the main character, was a Greek philosopher and the mentor of Plato. His philosophy is the basis and origin of the western philosophy. As a high schooler who often debates similar ideals and questions, I found this book to be very eye-opening and fascinating. Socrates doctrine proves itself true even in this day in age. That just goes to show, when it comes to ideals and behavior, humans haven’t changed very much. Republic is very well written and even after thousands of years it still captures its audience with its provoking revelations and relatable content. If you often find yourself debating similar questions then you might just find your answers here, but if you dislike philosophy or are set in your ways you probably will not find this book to be interesting. For me, this book was an enjoyable challenge and I definitely would read it again.

This Kindle edition is not as advertised and entirely useless. First and foremost, it is absolutely not an annotated edition; there is not a single note anywhere in the text. For that matter, there are no Stephanus numbers—the universal page numbers for all editions of Plato—so you will never be able to either cite this edition or find anything referred to by other writers. I'm not even sure that this is the Reeves/Grube translation, as there is no publication information whatsoever. Avoid this like the Athenian plague.
