My daughter is an excellent reader and does well above her grade level. Math is something that she struggles with, even at such a young age. She is intimidated by it easily and just shuts down at the sight of any math problem, whether she can solve it or not. After being a long time fan of McKellar I discovered she was an established author of children's books, specifically math related ones. I got the idea that my daughter would be encouraged by a woman that is a mathematician. She read the book and absolutely loved it. She was intrigued by the story and message, also the beautifully drawn pictures. The story flows well and is catchy, it definitely keeps her attention. My daughter also realized that there was substation happening, I feared she would lose interest then but she only become fascinated and excited about it. It brought my heart joy to hear her excitement. Later she decided to read the story to her baby doll. I highly recommend this book even for children that don't read yet. Their parents can read it to them, it introduces math in a positive and fun way. I'll most certainly buy more books by McKellar.

Math is fun! Really, math IS actually fun, specially if you learn it from an early age. Books like this are the secret sauce to kickstart that sense of wonder and science and nature; and if you child manages to keep that healthy curiosity all the way up to the adult age, expect him to have a bright future (math is essential to land high-paying jobs in the tech industry, for example).This lovely book by Danica and Jennifer is meant to teach your small child all the different ways to sum two numbers and get 10 as a result. After this book, your kid will know that 10 is sum of 2 and 8, of 3 and 7, and many other ways (how many?). This seems like an easy task, right? For us adults it is indeed, and for your kid it will be too after this book.And if your child enjoys this book, there is lots more to explore after that. For example, tell your child there is a game based on this! It's called "Kakuro", and it plays just like the well-know Sudoku: you have to fill in numbers in a grid, but this time the number must sum to given value. If the value is "10" and there are two empty cells, then the answer will certainly be one of the combinations we have learned in the book, such as 3 and 7! (To find out which is right combination, you need to check the other clues, just like a crossword).You may also be surprised to discover there are mathematicians who dedicate their life to study the very same problem posed in the book, of describing a number as a sum of other numbers. They call it "the partition problem". We have seen that 10=7+3, but if we allow more than two numbers, how many combinations there are? We can write 10=3+3+6, or 10=1+5+4, or my favorite 10=4+3+2+1. There are 42 different combinations! And, as it turns out, to this day no one know a formula to discover the number of partitions of a number, without calculating first the partitions of all number that comes before it.We can find approximations though, one of them was found by the great genius from India, Srinivasa Ramanujan. Hollywood just made a movie about him, search for "The Man Who Knew Infinity". There is even a scene in movie with him explaining the partition numbers and calculating the approximation!There are so many stories that you can tell your kid after this. Another example: see how math in this book is made with poetry? It even has rhymes!Wouldn't it be fun if mathematicians used poetry and rhymes to express mathematics? Well, this used to be the way in the past! Certainly you must remember the quadratic equation (minus b, plus or minus the square root of delta, and so on). There is a formula for the cubic equation as well, and the person who created that formula, the italian mathematician Tartaglia, presented it to world in 1539 as a rhyming poem! Search in google for "Tartaglia's cubic poem", your kid will enjoy to know that!Math is incredibly fun, and this book might be the one to unlock the potential in your child. Danica's text is great and Jennifer's illustrations are amazing (I must say my favorite character is caterpillar engineer). Don't pass it up!

While a lot of children's math books will have the child count a certain way (there is one apple, there are two apples, etc), this teaches your child that there are multiple ways to get the same number.In this case, the book takes math to the next level by teaching different ways to count to ten. For example, there is one thing and 9 other things.As for the quality of the book, the pictures are very vibrant, which will help keep your child's attention.

Full disclosure, we’re partial to butterflies, and that is what captured our attention first. If you’re looking for a fun, creative, and beautiful way to introduce or to work with math with your little ones, then this book is for you. It’s a super cute story and beautifully illustrated. My daughter loves it, and the tips for groupings in the back are clever for keeping kids interested as they get older.

I learned about the release of this book upon planning to attend the LA Times book fest a few months ago. I knew right away it was going to be something special. I'm already a sucker for children's books, because story time with my daughter ranks right up there with my hometown NFL team winning the Super Bowl (Bucs). I want to give my daughter positive role models as early as possible. I thought I was going to have to wait a few more years to introduce her to Danica's books, but I couldn't be happier with this opportunity & purchase. My daughter just turned 5 & was already learning to count, but I know this book motivated & got her past that imaginary mental barrier, with it's adorable pictures, & of course unique "story-teaching." Even geared towards young kids, Danica is able to make math seem normal, & in this case "magical." My daughter was super excited to share the story with her friends at pre-school. I believe this book should be a staple for all parents, especially those interested in early learning & starting your kids off on a good journey with math. It also make a great gift!

Such a great book! Beautiful pictures, fantastic message, very well-written and educational. My 3 year old was immediately a huge fan and requested for us to read it over and over again.

I loved this book! I gave it to my 3 year old niece and she loved it also. Her big sister, who is 8 reads it with her and also enjoys it. The way it brings math principles into a good story line is quite unique, and as a strong STEM supporter and scientist myself, I can't say how great it was to find this author. I will also want to thank the other reviewers and Amazon recommendations, as I found this purely via searching Amazon - the process worked perfectly. The book is very well written and the illustrations are lovely and very fun - highly recommend!

After finishing each new exercise, it's highly unlikely that you will know what you did to create the video you created. And even if you did, there's a very good chance you won't remember all that was thrown at you. There are no chapter summaries or a glossary of all the effects which would have been extremely helpful. You're better off going to Lynda.com or Udemy if you're serious about learning After Effects.

I hate this book. The author skips over vital details in the chapters, such as 'select layer 1'. This book obviously had no quality control, and this book is careless in instructing the reader.Instead of going back to ensure that he covered all of the details, he inserts little articles of 'Photoshop experts' who given details on non-critical aspects.To use an analogy, consider that you have been given driving instructions to someone's house for a birthday party. You are told to drive North to Street A, then drive West to Street B, then drive North again to Street C, then turn right and the house is the third on the left, with balloons and streamers.To continue the analogy, this book goes into detail about driving North to Street A, BUT it forgets to tell you to drive west to Street B; instead it tells you that you are doing fine and drive to North again to reach Street C. Then you are lost! They forgot to tell you that you had to travel West, so you didn't end up at the birthday party. Instead you ended up on a shady street where crack dealers hijacked your car and insulted your mother.This book is the basis for the course I am currently taking. Had I would have known the poor quality of this book, I would not have taken this class, and I would not have tried to learn Photoshop.

The Classroom in a Book Series excels at mixing in advanced tips even in the most basic lessons and this book is no exception.With a program as big and deep at Photoshop, this book does not attempt to cover every feature, command, filter and technique, but instead covers overall concepts, plus hits on multiple ways to accomplish common tasks and highlights new features. I am an experienced Photoshop user, worked on the creative side of ad agencies for the past 10+ years and use this book as an instructor for a 300 level course at a University. I taught for two years using the earlier edition Adobe Photoshop CS6 Classroom in a Book and noted a significant number of changes, mostly improvements, in the new Creative Cloud 2014 edition of the book. You learn many of the same things as in previous editions, the only real new skills are related to new features of Photoshop but more importantly the lessons themselves are improved. In this new edition it feels like you are not just moving pixels around but making improvements to the photos and layouts. The first four chapters should probably be completed in order, but after that you can start to pick and choose the topics that look most interesting to you. Most lessons clock in right at an hour, which is ideal for a classroom setting, and shorter than the often 90 minute lessons from before. If you like the old fashioned physical DVD with the tutorial files you may want to grab the CS6 or older version of the book, the CC editions of the book require that you create an online account to download the lesson files.CHAPTER 1You learn a good collection of techniques from selections, to basic color correction and adding shapes & text to create a birthday card. The tutorial leaves you feeling like you accomplished something, more so than the Chapter 1 from the CS6 version of the book.CHAPTER 2This lesson highlights the photo correction tools that have made Photoshop famous. A must read, my students left the chapter excited by the opportunities that had been opened. In previous editions, the lesson had the reader change a photo using several of the same tools, but the before and after in this lesson feels more dramatic.CHAPTER 3A very good overview of the multitude of selection tools available in Photoshop. Seasoned professionals are likely to learn at least one thing new.CHAPTER 4The reader builds a postcard/poster by combining several photos while learning about layers, blending modes, gradients and drop shadows. This chapter is one of the few that is virtually unchanged from the CS6 edition of the book.CHAPTER 5Titled "Quick Fixes", chapter five is made up of 7 mini-lessons, this chapter covers a lot of the "How do I..." questions that a new photoshop user might ask, such as how to remove red eye, create a panorama, blur the background, or remove a duck from a photo. This chapter replaces "Correcting and Enhancing Digital Photographs" from previous editions. Some of the techniques from the old chapter 5 that aren't covered in thew new chapter 5 are now covered in chapter 12.CHAPTER 6More advanced features such as using masks and puppet warp. I found this a good chapter to send students down who may already know the basics, while skipping it for the class as a whole.CHAPTER 7This chapter covers typography tools, including ones you'll rarely use.CHAPTER 8The reader will learn a little about the bezier tool in this chapter but there is a little bit too much hand holding. The lesson never really pushes the learner to try the bezier tool on their own without a paint-by-numbers guide. This is one of the few chapters that will take more than an hour.CHAPTER 9The chapter on advanced compositing is fun, slightly cheesy and is well timed in teaching during the fall semester as it has a Halloween theme.CHAPTERS 10-15Dive in to niche uses of Photoshop that are rarely used by most professionals, and not really enough information to become proficient in any of those uses.All in all, Adobe Photoshop CC Classroom in a Book lives up to the strong reputation of the Classroom in a Book series. This was my first "Classsroom in a Book" experience, and I can assure you that this was an amazingly well-led and instructive book to learn with! Because it comes with the PeachPit lessons, you can work through every project using their downloadable lesson content, and really learn much better than just reading something.Every detail is covered so you are never lost without knowing which step to take next, which I have found to be an issue with online or YouTube tutorials that assume even beginners know all of the basics. I enjoyed that every little step, no matter how trivial is detailed with photos and instructions. The book has very little reading and lots of photos/ graphic demonstrations instead, yay! Basically you have a paragraph or two explaining what you are about to do and why, then lots of photos showing you what your screen should look like and the steps to take. Each time you need to complete a step, it repeats how to do it so you don't have to look back through the book to remember how something is done. It also shows you multiple ways to do different steps (short cuts, long version, etc.) so you can choose your favorite way.My only complaint is that there are several steps/ options which belong to a different/older version than my updated CC subscription, which left me somewhat frustrated and having to Google a few times to resolve. But, I was able to find everything I needed to work through these few exceptions by just Googling online.

I love these pictures and have ended up loving sitting down to work on these, but only because I switched pens! The plastic one that is comes with doesn't scratch off satisfactorily, and I have found that if I use a wood one (like from my daughters': https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1593597789/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1), that it works sooo much better. With the plastic one, I felt frustrated, and with the wood one, I'm actually looking forward to when I get to work on it!

70-200mm lens at 200mm, ISO 125, 1/3 sec. at f/10I would describe myself as a budding enthusiast. I've had a Canon Rebel T1i for about four years, but have never really gotten beyond full auto, and sometimes struggled even with that, particularly at night. I was looking for a book to explain three basic things:1. Camera bodies (dSLRs vs. mirrorless Micro Four Thirds, crop vs. full frame, etc.)2. Lenses (focal length, zoom power, and aperture, plus the impact of crop factor)3. Technical basics (aperture, ISO, and shutter speed; what PPI and DPI really mean in practical terms; the difference between JPEG and Raw; what Landscape and Portrait and other preset modes on your camera are actually doing).All of these questions were basically answered in the first few chapters and ~100 pages of the book, and in a pretty easy read. After reading those first few chapters, I found myself able to fairly competently browse photography website and magazines without being completely lost. I can tell you what f/2.8 is (the aperture), what 1/500 sec. refers to (shutter speed), and what a photographer means by ISO 100 and 70-200mm at 200mm.Much of the middle of the book (chapters 4-7) deal with the basics of photography and composition, and is probably not any better or worse than other entry level books on photography. The remainder of the book deals with fairly basic (for dummies) material on downloading and printing pictures (chapters 8 and 9), and stuff like creating desktop wallpaper and slide shows (chapter 10).Overall, I think the book is a pretty good value for $15. Personally, I've shied away from the "For Dummies" line in the past, as I've found that there are better books for many of the subjects that I have been interested in. But if you're like me and are at a level where you're even considering a "For Dummies" book -- and if you're reading this review, I suspect you are -- then this book should do the trick, and my guess is that Digital Photography For Dummies is probably exactly the book you are looking for.

Great book. Simple easy to read and understand. I bought a canon rebel last year. I have kept it on auto since day one because I was intimidated by my first dslr camera.Its time to move forward and see what I can learn!!!

Most of the first half of the book deals with selection of a digital point-and-shoot or DSLR, an area that I haven't seen addressed elsewhere other than in comparison tests in popular magazines. The treatment in the book is easily accessible by beginners, unlike much of the meat of the comparison articles which are performance parameter comparisons.The second half of the book is a tutorial on effective use of a digital point-and-shoot or DSLR right out of the box. I bought this book as a gift for a very intelligent fellow who has had some difficulty in effective use of a great DSLR, and this part of the book could have been written for him and his family. The book ends with a chapter that is action-packed with excellent tips on using the camera, getting the pictures out of it, sending them by e-mail or putting them on a blog or whatever, and printing them through web services, at CVS or whatever, or at home. Thus the all-important step of how to get great prints from a great camera is the ending of the book.For those who shoot for Facebook or other blogs or to display their cameras in e-mail or on smartphones, or even those who simply use the great miniature cameras that come with some newer smartphones, this book is an excellent tutorial and reference for getting pictures that display well on computers, tablets, and smartphones. Except for the number of pixels (you need lots more pixels for sharp prints), it's the same art and science.

This book provides a great introduction to the basic techniques of serious digital photography. This was wonderful for me as I had literally NO idea of how to operate a digital camera correctly (I was the stand-point-shoot kind of guy) and I'm training to become an Archaeologist, so I really need to know my way around Photography (also, I love animals -especially bugs- and spend lots of time chasing them down and taking pics of them). This book got me from not knowing why even my stills got blurred (I have shaky hands) to actually getting almost exactly the pictures I want every time. I say "almost" because my point-and-shoot camera is only one step above "basic", but I'm sure as soon as I get my hands on a nice SLR I'll be able to nail it because of this book.The computer chapters take you through the very basics of viewing, downloading, printing, making minor edits to your pictures and even creating screensavers on common software and platforms (for example, Windows Live Photo Gallery), which is great, because the author doesn't assume you have gargantuan pro (or semi-pro) software for photo edition. The only thing lacking, in my oppinion, is too few info on lenses (that would've made it perfect), but then again, the book is aimed for laymen, which don't necessarily own SLRs (I don't) and probably won't need to much info on lenses. Still, make no mistake: you'll have the fundamental data on lenses here and learn what (and where) to look for when you decide to take the SLR step and buy lenses.I must stress, though, that this is aimed for the very beginners. If you already know about illumination, manipulating ISO, shutter speeds, balancing colors, composing images, digitally retouching pics and stuff, you may find it too basic. Again, if you know nothing about these subjects, this book is a great place to start. If you don't even have a camera but are considering getting one, this is for you: you'll feel quite satisfied when you get the most juice from your camera no matter how simple it is.

Although this is very interesting and informative, it isn't what I expected. I thought I was purchasing a book of pre-Christian short stories. It is not. It is a history book. The author does a good job of explaining the similarites of mythologies of different regions and how they evolved, and how they were affected by the coming of Christianity. The book also includes references to the short stories I was looking for, along with extensive footnotes and a bibliography, so it makes a good reference book. There are also a few crafts and recipies included.

I LOVE this book. It quaint, fun, old world and overall amazing. It takes you to a whole different place and time yet has great recipes and crafts to bring the old ways into the modern days. I love the stories in this book. It’s well writen. The cover artwork is magical. I tell myself that’s my cabin in the woods lol. Christmas is a time of giving a time of sharing and of tradition -yet has that darkness in Santa’s shadow-looming somewhere in the winter woods, on the frozen wind, in the cover of night. Something ancient, something wild and curious. I recommend being thankful for being “in” where it’s safe! Get cozy by the fire with your favorite cup of tea or hot cocoa and enjoy this book. Yes, check out of the modern Holiday sales rush- the hustle and bustle of shopping for presents just for a moment to be sent back to the Old magic of Christmas. You won’t want to leave...Amazon! I finally understood that part of the song, "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" when it spoke of scary ghost stories and tales of Christmases long time ago, since the only ghost story I ever heard connected with Christmas was "A Christmas Carol". Here is a collection of old myths and legends that are truly delightfully creepy, and understandable, since the Longest Night of the Year seemed to make Winter stretch interminably. Most of these tales were designed to scare children into behaving and being careful as some of the more gruesome characters were actually considered out to get them otherwise. The Norse myths also make a respectable showing here as these winter myths, many of them came from that region. Here, we have the Wild Hunt and mysterious Odin as an origin for Santa Claus and the goddess Perchta. We also find Befana, the old woman wanderer who belatedly followed the Three Kings and is forever granting small gifts to children on her journeys in the hope of one day finding the Christ Child. This is a book that takes one into the darkest part of the year, where more than Winter can send a chill down the spine.

Raedisch does a great job in covering and sorting the folklore centering on Christmas/Winter solstice in the Germanic and Slavic regions of Europe. While acknowledging the influences of Christianity and time, lots of time, she points to the lore that pre-dates Christianity and shows how various motif changed over time and distance. While the focus remains in central Europe, she reaches out to other Indo-European cultures where appropriate. Besides the very useful information, Raedisch, is a delight to read, making the folklore accessible and fun.

The Christmas and pre-Christmas traditions and stories are well chosen, and the author's writing is really delightful. If you want to go a bit beyond just reading and practice some old Christmas magic yourself, the ideas here are good ones - not too complicated or time consuming, and a great place to begin expanding your knowledge of how our ancestors celebrated Christmas. I want to stress again how beautifully written this book is and what a pleasure it was to read it. In an era where editors seemingly don't exist anymore, it's rare to find a book that isn't full of errors of every sort from the grammatical to the nonsensical. Linda Raedisch isn't just someone who knows her subject; she is a WRITER who knows her subject and manifests that knowledge in lovingly crafted prose that is a real joy to read.

If you enjoy history, folklore, holidays, botany and some spine chilling stories thrown in for good measure you will enjoy this book. There are even craft projects for those so inclined. There are backstories here for so many holiday traditions and tales that give a glimpse into the old life of European villages.Reading this at this time of year (October) was especially fun. Well written with a nice sense of humor too.

This book is so full of fun discoveries—and a some crafts too (I even successfully made a couple!).

This book is a fantastic addition to the collection of any student of religions, magic, paganism, or Christmas. She does a great job researching, giving me the leads to further research what interests me most more than she is able to go into in this book alone, and the crafts and activities she adds throughout the book really add to the fun. My mother skimmed this book when I visited for the holidays and only a few pages in she had to order a copy for herself!
