My brother asked in a recent conversation, "Whatever happened to the copy of Uncle Remus Tales mom used to read us?" Replying, "I don't know," my hunt was on to locate the precise edition for his 65th birthday present. This is that edition; this is The Book. Every tale, every bit of folklore, fable, and parable accompanied by wonderful pen and ink drawings is here. These are not the Disney-fied kiddy tales you might recall from "Song of the South." These are Joel Chandler Harris's effort to record in full dialect the stories he heard as a yourh from a very old and wise man in the plantation slave quarters. It took a gifted ear to capture them and even greater talent to read them aloud in "these days of modern times." Reading them silently is nearly impossible, I find. These tales cry out to be Told.

This book is a wonderful collection of old folk tales that are being eliminated from our world in the name of political correctness. It is very unfortunate that we are losing a significant part of our literary history because it is written in a dialect that is no longer popular and occasionally uses words that can be viewed as offensive, while at the same time any four letter word or sexual reference is fine. Some of the tales are simply entertaining and others contain important lessons about values and morals. Reading the tales brought back many pleasant memories of my childhood growing up in rural Arkansas. Thanks to Amazon for making it available.

This is not just a book of stories. It is a handbook on the telling of stories to children. So the reader should beware that reading it may teach them to see the connections between their world and the magical world of myth. And if their life is merely a cardboard cutout primed to be painted by 'the media' they may... change.These are the classic stories reportedly told to Harris as a child. As the stories are a living legacy the reader needs to know that Harris' version is not the only one; there are as many versions as there are storytellers. This is just the one that was put into print.The charm is in the drama of the telling. Core characters are the same as in stories from around the world. The key character is of course the Trickster. Uncle Remus borrowed the West African version, Zomo the Hare, but he could as easily have been Loki, Coyote, the (Japanese) Badger. No matter where he was borne he became Brother Rabbit.The stories themselves are tales of power, greed and love, (plus the trickery) told to a child and for children forever. There is an ebb and flow which continues and moves through one crisis after another toward the inevitable end which is when the child grows up and the magical creatures become plain dogs, foxes, bears, cows and rabbits. (These stories do inevitably end but the unwary reader could find themselves transcending them. Sometimes when a person starts reading them aloud, one or two a week when their child is very small something happens to the reader which never happens when watching TV. One night they run out of Uncle Remus tales and they start telling about the magic that had been hiding in their own neighborhood or even their back yard. One can't predict what happens next.)Many people find his spelling to be difficult; I am one of them. I have always thought that southern rural dialects should be spelled and punctuated as standard English. One should take their cue from writers in other languages and keep standard spelling no matter what is the accent or dialect. But once one understands the logic of his orthography the book flows well enough.There is something here for every reader, even those of the perpetually offended class. Of course this book will give them fertile soil to sow their thistles. As they complain about the works of others they will perpetrate the bitter meaning of their own meager lives. They can deconstruct, bemoan (even bewail) to their hearts' content. The stories don't care. They will endure. As will the children of those unlucky folk who can't see the magic.

Just as i remember growing up my mom would read this book to me and my sister. I thought id go and start reading it to my boys. As you read you almost have to change the way you talk as the wording is in old slave accent. Love the stories.

I treasure this book as I have all my life - to have Uncle Remus would be a dream come true. I think he was the wisest character I've ever read about and i am grateful.Thank you.

I was raised in the south by a Mother that was probably a 4th generation southerner. The tales of Uncle Remus were a staple in her repertoire of bedtime stories. Yes,,,some are politically incorrect these days. Yes,,,,not many people these days would get the language "accents." But...timeless tales and part of southern history. My Granny told Uncle Remus stories to my Mama. My mama told them to me. My mama also told them to her grandchildren (who remember those storytelling times with Grandmama fondly). My grandson is due to be born in a month or so,,,,I don't know these stories by heart like my mama did...and I live on the other side of the U.S.....but every time my daughter reads a tale from this book to her son, she'll be passing on family history.

A great piece of our American history to own and share with every new generation before political correctness kills common sense and nostalgia completely off

This is a beautifully put together book with original text and illustrations--over 800 pages of stories! There is a glossary at the back which helps a little, but it's almost like a puzzle sometimes figuring out the dialect, like reading the molespeech in Redwall books but based on African American dialect of the late-1800s. Since I have read that these stories are traditional folklore verified by multiple sources at the time of writing (at least according to Wikipedia), it's really an amazing compilation.

Assassin of Truths is the third and final book in the young adult fantasy Library Jumpers series by Brenda Drake. Each book is definitely a continuation and would be best to start the story at the beginning with the first book of the series. Itâ€™s definitely a high intensity, action packed ride and well worth the three book read though.The story revolves around Gia Kearns who when out visiting a library with her friends spotted a cute boy but while Gia was watching he simply disappeared. When she and her friends investigated they found heâ€™d been looking at a book on various libraries around the world and before they knew it they were sucked into the book themselves and transported to another library halfway around the world.After the jump through the book Gia found that she belong to a world of Sentinals that were charged with protecting humans and the gateways in the libraries. This world that had been hidden from Gia her whole life brought with it plenty of action and adventure along with danger as she navigated her way after finding out of a prophecy that she is a part of in this new world hidden from humans.This series always reminded me a bit of the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare with the portal jumping and demon fighting with magic and spells involved. While similar though in style Brenda Drake certainly built her own story with these characters that had itâ€™s ups and downs all along the way. While there was a love triangle and a bit of insta-love in the beginning every plays out in itâ€™s own time by the end of the series and fit the story.I loved that all along the way the story continued to grow and expand with each book. The magic we learned of in book one continued to expand, the world of the library jumpers added characters and locations all throughout the series and along with it the danger surrounding the characters also continued to grow until the explosive end. Gia herself also grew with the story but by this third she still had a few moments I questioned so Iâ€™m ending this series at 4.5 stars but certainly found it fun and entertaining along the way.I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

This series really captured my heart with its unique take on magic and fantasy. And what book lover wouldn't adore books where the main characters are warriors that visit libraries around the world on a regular basis?So yes, one of the most incredible things about this book and this series is Drake's addictive brand of urban fantasy. Drake writes her characters in such a way that they become a part of you and you rapidly become attached to them. I love the relationships that are built in this series. They make the characters really stand out and speak loudly to the reader. No matter where the plot was going, I was always invested in the lives of the characters. I was overjoyed in their happiness, and I cried along with them in their pain.The plot was strong and I really enjoyed the story and how things ended. There were surprises and twists in the story that I just didn't see coming. This book kept me on my toes. The pacing was perfect and I have no complaints about the execution. I didn't feel like the boss fight at the end of the book could have been more climactic when everything was said and done. There was a lot of buildup to it, but then it just sort of ends abruptly.The romance in this book didn't feel as swoon-worthy as in the last book, but I have to say that I liked where things went. I liked the person that Gia ended up with in the end. I was rooting for them the whole time. And as far as the other boy that had her affections, I am glad that they were able to work things out and stay friends in the end. It really ended well after all the drama in the last book where the romance was concerned. I also liked seeing some of the side characters end up happy in their love lives as well. It was a pretty perfect end.Overall, this is just a fantastic series! This book really met my expectations in every way. If you are a fan of young adult fantasy, then this series should be on your radar! With its unique premise and lovable characters, you will not be disappointed! I am eager to read more fantasy from Brenda Drake!

My daughter (5) is affected by the moon and I am seeking insight and understanding. This book did not give it, but it did give proof that the moon affects us, not as much as before electric light, but still does. This book looked at the extremes in our society to prove a daily fact of life: our bodies are connected to the universe, and the pull of the the earth and moon affects us.

Arnold Lieber takes the reader on whirlwind tour of his studies of the affects of the moon on violence, blood flow, and other aspects of his "biological tides theory". This book is an updated version derived from his previous work "The Lunar Effect : Biological Tides and Human Emotions". It is mostly a combination of lamen's descriptions of his scientific papers, summaries, support and challenges to other researchers' work, and some speculation as he poses theories to account for the varied research results involving "biological tides".The overall tone of the book somehow seems to maintain a balance between skepticism and open mindedness, science and supposition. Do not be fooled; the man is a scientist that is pushing the bounds of the modern displine. I admire his courage and tenacity.That said, I must admit that I was disapointed by the book. I would have liked to have seen more coverage of folk beliefs, mysticism, and popular culture about the moon being grafted to current research. The book plays with the aspects of science now being able to confirm "what we have always known" but the presentation of popular belief could have been more inspiring and entertaining. Somehow this manages to be a book for the lamen which purportes to be serious science. In the end I found it odd but enjoyable. I can see this book being considered "too scientific" for some and "not heavy enough" for others.

I was disappointed in ordering this book. The book had lots of scientific information about the relationship and affects between the moon and criminal activities among other theories, it would have been interesting if some of the research mentioned the affect of the moon on other cultures throughout history , mythology, and folk beliefs.

It has been a while since I have read a book. This being the 1st book about the moon that I have read; it does make me want to read other books about related topics. I am definately going to refer it to friends..Especially friends/strangers who inquire about my moon/sun tattoo. I had came across this book at my local library. Read it in a few hours. Which, lead to my looking up the author on the internet.( bringing me here). I am more knowledged (now) about the moon than before. A nice introduction to a topic that I will end up reading more about.

i did not have that problem. my first attempt at making a boomerang was an instant success. i read the few pages on making your first boomerang and an hour later i had my first successful flight. it is a reprint of a book from the twenties or thirties and i got a kick out of one of the materials being a stick that is used to measure how much gasoline is in the tank of an automobile. Classic! cars may have changed since then but the basic properties of boomerangs hasnt. if you want to impress some kids just whittle out a boomerang for them.

Awfully dated but still a useful and informative guide for the beginner. I plan on using this as an easy introduction to the hobby.

Bought this as a supplement present for my boyfriend to go with a boomerang. I didn't think this was going to be as much of a hit as it was!! Easy to read and interesting. You might even be inspired to make your own boomerang.

Fun little book for me. I have learned to "customize" my store bought boomerangs. It has shown me how to teach my 6 year old grandson to make and throw boomerangs as easily as paper airplanes.

My nephew likes the book...well he likes the idea of boomerangs and I read it to him. It's fun of you want to build one.

It is a little larger than I would like, but it fits the pocket in my purse where I carry it. I like a "manual" calendar because I can't get use to using my phone (which I really think of as a phone....). It does have sufficient space for writing notes when needed on the side. I like that it is two years, so that I won't have to look for a new one next year!

Wonderful little calendar. Sister gave me one last year for my birthday and I loved it so much I bought my own this year!!
