I am a new iMac owner and have had my iMac for a month.I feel like I am ready to learn more about how to use it. This book is perfect for my purpose. It has 5 books in 1 starting with the basics of the Apple Mac which has 190 pages of information that is so helpful in learning about the Mac. The next book is Online Communications which contains over 100 pages of information about setting up email, using Safari, Face Time and message center. The next book is Beyond the Basics which has over 100 pages dealing with backing up, setting up wireless network, sharing files, running windows on a Mac and troubleshooting. Book 4 has almost 200 pages dealing with iTunes, videos, photos, movies and music. The final book Taking Care of Business has 150 pages on calendar, contacts and the iWork program with the spreadsheet, powerpoint and document formation. This is a great book to read now and then keep around for future references. I highly recommend it to all new Mac owners.

What can I say! LOTS of information. I just switched to a Mac from a Dell and needed to know the differences. This is a HUGE BOOK and it explained it all. Anything I had a question about...was in this book. And the fact I bought it used from Amazon make it even BETTER for the price!

What I expected

It is comprehensive to the point of overload but I miss the jokes and sense of humor that I have come to expect from "Dummies" books.

Now I feel I have as complete an understanding of the battle and what led up to it as a casual student of World War II could hope to have.The book (necessarily) begins with the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor by the Kido Butai, the Japanese Navy's mobile carrier force commanded by Admiral Yamamoto, i.e. the effect this attack had on the fighting assets subsequently available to the U.S. Navy. Moving on in examining the next six months leading to the Midway confrontation, Symonds considers the nature and strategic bent of the two opposing navies, their commanders, their ships and planes, the men that flew the latter, and the preliminary skirmishes (if they can be called such): the American carrier raids on the Marshalls and Gilberts islands in February 1942 and the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942.Once the main act gets underway and evolves to a conclusion that was remarkably different than what the Japanese planners had envisioned, the reader can perhaps not but be struck by the apparent triviality of circumstances which were key to the outcome of the battle, e.g. the delayed take-off of a Japanese scout plane and the wake generated by a Japanese destroyer as it proceeded at flank speed to catch up with its task force; that old saw about the loss of a horseshoe nail to the survival of a kingdom comes to mind.The maneuvers of opposing armies across a landscape relative to rivers, towns, hills, or enemy entrenchments are simple to describe and map compared to ship and plane movements across a featureless ocean. One of the strengths of the BATTLE OF MIDWAY narrative is the author's skill at doing just that. At no time was I confused. The thirteen included maps are clearly rendered and invaluable.There were two other aspects of the chronicle that stood out for me, though I doubt that effect was intended by Symonds. One was the complete ineptitude of the commander of the U.S.S. Hornet's air group; one wonders how he continued up the promotion ladder to vice-admiral as his career progressed. Really? The second was the casual and appalling brutality inflicted on a few downed American pilots fished out of the sea by the Japanese, e.g. in one instance, two airmen, after being interrogated by their captors, had weights tied to their legs and they were tossed back into the ocean.Was the outcome of the Battle of Midway based on better luck or abilities? For me, it came down to the former. But good luck is a part of life (or not), and if it gets me home safe at the end of the day, I'll take it.THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY is a must-read for anyone interested in the Pacific War of World War II.

Symonds did his homework, turning history over with the spade of research and revealing a treasure trove of priceless information in the background leading up to this catastrophe for the Imperial Japanese Navy.One has to really wonder about Yamamoto after reading this book. To me, he shares as much blame as Nagumo, after reading this expertly written and cited book.Notwithstanding the fact that we had their code, we attacked with suicidal fanaticism. Spruance was mortified he had only three remaining torpedo bombers left at the end.Others things, too - I had thought the Japanese had at least SOME type of radar - wrong answer!Such a good book - I only wish it could continue forever.

This account of the turning point battle of WW 2 in the Pacific offers a good overview of the battle, including the factors that led to its occurrence. It provides a good account of both sides, a major component of any good military history. The narrative offers an interesting study of the major commanders, their fleets and the circumstances leading to the encounter. As far as I can tell, its timeline of events is accurate, a major factor considering that the battle was fought across the International Date Line. This fact has often led to confusion in other accounts of the action. It also explores one of the major questions that arose from the battle, I.e. why the USS Hornet's strike against the Japanese carrier strike force was sent on an incorrect heading. Only its torpedo squadron was able to find it and only because its leader broke away from the fighters and dive bombers on his own initiative and found the Japanese carriers. This book is a worthy companion to "Miracle at Midway." Anyone interested in the Pacific War will find both these books informative and engrossing.

This is the American version of the most important battle of the pacific war against Japan. It is a well told story that will make one cringe at the almost criminal negligence of sending young men to die in torpedo planes not fit for the service in which they were employed and dropping faulty torpedoes that did no damage to the Japanese. There were hardly any survivors of the torpedo squadrons sent out. Thank heavens for the dive bombers that sank the four Japanese carriers that won the battle for the Americans.This book should be read first and then Shattered Sword, the Japanese account of the battle.

This is a great history of the Battle of Midway. Told in an exciting style but with tremendous historical detail, the book would be a great read even if the subject weren’t so fascinating. Whether you are a student of Pacific War history or not, you’ll enjoy this book.The author spends much of the book setting the stage, which I think really helps put the battle in context. He focuses on the Japanese and their thinking both tactical and strategic and the various political and military conditions that led them to draw the US into a battle near Midway. Some time is spent examining the Battle of the Coral Sea and how the lessons of that battle shaped thinking at Midway. He also examines the history and personalities of the leaders of both sides, which both humanizes and gives insight into their thought processes. There are also plenty of personal details about various participants of the battle that give real feeling to the narrative. Of particular note is the piecing together of what really happened to the Hornet’s “Flight to Nowhere” and the fighting spirit of Lt.Cmdr Waldron and VT-8.It would have been helpful for the author to include a detailed timeline of the battle, perhaps in the appendix, that would have made more clear the sequence of events. It was somewhat laborious to keep the things in chronological order from the text. That is my only real complaint. That and more maps. There should always be more maps.

Sometimes a writer conceives of a brilliant trilogy. Then, that trilogy proves so popular that it becomes an industry. Walt Longmire by Craig Johnson was one. Another was Coyote by Allen Steele, a science fiction series that spawned other stories that were, essentially, spin-offs. Few such continuing dramas have experienced the adulation of J. D. Robb’s police procedural featuring Eve Dallas.If you’re new to the series, you might want to read “Naked In Death” first. At just $2.99, it actually serves as an inexpensive introduction. I am a third of the way through J.D. Robb’s newest book and am disappointed. I have read the entire series more than once and this one doesn’t feel as if it was written by Robb. Very stilted and way too much narrative. I will make myself finish and may have a better opinion once done. If so, I will update my review.

I am starting to wonder if these books are actually being written by Nora Roberts or if only some of them are. This is another so-so book. It seems like the character development is not really there. This is disappointing has her last book was excellent and I thought she was coming back. I have all the books for the "In Death" series and have read several of them over multiple times and you can see the decline in character development. I think I will go back to getting them from my local library before making purchase for my collection.

This is not a book. If the reader is feeling generous it's a short story and not a very good one. The reader is actually purchasing the outline for what might have been a decent book. However, what got downloaded was a high school English lit paper that when graded would probably gotten a "D" at best. Did someone miss the Avengers Civil War? "Language". Really? Can't come up with anything original. Pathetic! Congratulations to Agent Teasdale on changing agencies. Homeland to FBI but don't dwell on it I'm sure in the next installment she will be with the NSA and old Robb couldn't actually be bothered to flesh out the character anyway. Like the author Teasdale wasn't really there.

I have to go with most reviews. Did JD Robb aka Nora Roberts really write this? It is as if her attention or mine just isn't into it anymore. I have loved JD Robb from beginning but I do feel as if her mind is more on her newest Nora Roberts novels than Eve Dallas. This last was so bland and just not interesting.

This book is boring. I'm tempted to skip to the last two chapters to find out whodunit. Since publishing her first book in 1981 Nora Roberts has written at least 225 novels. That's an average of about five books per year. Makes me wonder if she actually wrote all of them. Some are very good. "Northern Lights", "Tribute", "High Noon", "The Liar", and "The Search" are among my favorites.

I have been a fan of JD Robb/Nora Roberts since the very beginning with her Naked in Death book. And honestly, I wonder how another book in the series (48 and counting now), can still be fun and interesting to read. But here I am, just finished reading Connections In Death and I am a happy camper.It's a joy to see how these characters, whom I have come to love and respect, continue to grow and develop. I have always been a fan of Eve and Roarke and the love, respect and dynamic between them. You would think it can get old or corny, but it simply doesn't...in fact it keeps getting better. Their relationship, with each other and with their circle, deepens and matures with every telling. It is such a treat to read and be witness of it in some way.With Connections, I really liked just how the story unfolded. It was not so much the mystery but the process of solving it - the teamwork involved, and the grit that comes from doing the job. A bonus is in reading about how the family (which is how I see Eve, Roarke and their friends) pulls for one another; how characters from different books make a significant appearance and the way they all work together to help bring justice. It makes me wish that cops here and everywhere have that same dedication and love of service.All in all, I'm thrilled to still be feeling so engaged and riveted with this series. It is a testament to Ms. Roberts' (all hail the undisputed queen!) talent, dedication, creativity, commitment and hard work. She is an inspiration. What an amazing and great series...and this booking particular? It's definitely a wonderful addition. Bravo and cheers to many more!

I'm not quite sure how to rate this book. The story was great. But there wasn't any heat. No fire inside Eve,no urgency about finding killers. And with Eve being emotionally absent, there was nothing there for the others to play off of. Bring the real Eve back.

This book comes highly recommended by folks on the internet, but upon reading it I can’t see why. There are some useful hints, but not much substance. This is certainly not a how to book. There’s nothing wrong with books that are more inspirational than instructional, but in the case of this book, that inspiration is thin.If your goal is fun, this is an okay book.If your goal is professional work with apparel, please skip the section about drawing flats. The examples given here are fear too stylized to be a of use in a tech pack, although they might do well enough to convey ideas to merchants or buyers.

I think the images inside are beautiful, and I love referencing this book, but I was looking for something with a bit more instructional purpose. I'm taking a fashion drawing class at FIT, and while this is fine for me as a supplement to my course, it definitely doesn't give you a great sense of how to accomplish those types of drawings. There are a few pages talking about the balance line, proportion etc. But then most of the book is just example drawings. No real "technique" for drawing flats, garments etc. I recommend for inspiration, but not for technique!

One of the best books about fashion illustration I believe. It covers anatomy (specific to fashion illustration), how to draw the body in different poses, how to draw different types of fabrics, how to draw men and children. I would highly recommend this book if you just starting out in fashion illustration.

I am taking fashion illustration classes, and this has helped tremendously. Each teacher and each author of such a book has their own style, and one should see various artists, taking what resonates. I like how Ms. Kiper uses unusual/unnatural colors, setting a particular mood - such as the use of blue for skin and multiple colors for hair. Very effective.

I am very inspired by this book. I draw beautiful images and write little stories to go with them in a language, other than English. It helps to make language learning fun and inspirational....instead of memorizing lists and lists of verb conjugations, for example. I am an artist/painter, but am very inspired by the artistic beauty of these figure renditions.

I adore this book! My fashion illustrations went from zero to sixty in just a few days after reading the book. The language is very easy and the illustrations and guidelines are easy to follow along with and pick up. This is a great book for the budding novice and the season illustration would also be able to enjoy this book as well. I look forward to reading other books by Anna Kiper this was very inspiring. I also loved how all mediums were demonstrated as well as techniques for application and the different types of clothing material. Excellent and exactly what i was looking for!

Do not expect to learn how to draw. Do not expect to learn how to draw fashion models. You will learn that some models are 8 heads high, and some up to 10. That's about it. You will see a lot of examples and inspiration. And since I know how to draw, but need to see examples of many different styles, this book was worth it for me.

Want to learn how to draw fashion illustrations including instructions on how to achieve high-end haute couture clothing, styles? This is the book. It helps an artist with color, design, with an emphasis on the "whole look." A gift to young artist working in various mediums. Her beginning fashion designs showed real promise, but it seemed she didn't have a good reference book. It's important that the reader already has figure drawing talents, if it's just an inkling at this point. This book is to get the 'essence' of design. The colors absolutely took my breath away .. not seen anything as complete as this for a young designer. One needs a beautiful inspirational guide to move onto to higher levels of work. She loved this and was excited to get started. Happy that I also purchased a fine quality sketch book, also artist-quality colored pencils with this purchase. Very impressive, a great model for what an artist might be capable of, maybe to just to open an imagination. Beautifully written, there are illustrations and instructions to figure drawing, types of materials and how they are drawn, many unique creations to dream upon. A great purchase for anyone thinking of going into fashion illustrations for a career or for another creative facet of their artistry.

I spent nearly 30 years of my pre-retirement adult life teaching philosophy at the college level, having prior to this received my doctorate in philosophy from Johns Hopkins. Several years ago, because of an ongoing secondary interest in the history of Western civilization, I began reading through Will and Ariel Durant's multivolume "The Story of Civilization," a project that took me three years to complete. I found it to be a thorough (albeit slightly dated) summary of the history of Western civilization through the time of Napoleon.Because I was no longer teaching and had a bit of time on my hands, I decided to read through Will Durant's "The Story of Philosophy," a work that I had never had the opportunity to peruse during my professional career. I figured it would offer a refresher course on some of the philosophers who had less bearing on the areas of philosophy I regularly taught. I also hoped that it would give me some fresh insights into the philosophers and philosophical movements with which I possessed a degree of familiarity.The book was not what I expected. I will note why momentarily. First, however, the positive. As I knew from having read his "Story of Civilization," Will Durant is an engaging writer. He is eloquent without being flowery or effete. His vocabulary is extensive, but he does not use it to show off his erudition. In no way is he pretentious. He is also able to explain difficult ideas in a straightforward, understandable fashion, certainly a boon when discussing the theories of philosophers. And he is good at explaining how the thought of a philosopher flows from and contrasts with that of his forbears.However, if one is expecting a true history of philosophy, this is not the book to read. I would go so far as to say that the title of the book is quite misleading. This is not the story of philosophy. It is the story of the writings of those philosophers who, for whatever reason, Durant wants to highlight. The book pays no significant attention to ancient philosophy before Socrates or after Aristotle. While Socrates/Plato and Aristotle are examined in detail, subsequent developments in Greek and Roman thought are either covered in a most sketchy manner or absent altogether. For example, neo-Platonism in general and Plotinus in particular, are ignored.Even more shocking is Durant's treatment of the entire middle ages. It is in fact a non-treatment. Without explanation (other than that Durant doesn't think it is important) we skip over nearly a thousand years of Western thought and quickly find ourselves studying the philosophy of Francis Bacon. One could read this book without being aware of philosophers such as Anselm, Peter Lombard, Bonaventure, Aquinas, Duns Scotus, William of Ockham, and many others (not to mention the Islamic philosophers of the tenth and eleventh centuries).When we come to post-medieval philosophy, while we are treated to a fairly detailed explication of Francis Bacon, Spinoza, Voltaire, and Kant, Durant doesn't even mention Descartes (sometimes regarded as the father of modern philosophy) or the British Empiricists (Locke, Berkeley, and Hume) except by way of extremely brief references when presenting the thought of other philosophers.Durant does somewhat better in describing the major figures of nineteenth century philosophy. Hegel, Schopenhauer, and Nietzsche are all given extensive space. However, Durant spends an inordinate amount of time describing the thought of Herbert Spencer, who today is nearly forgotten.Does all this mean this book is not worth reading? No, it doesn't. I've given it Four Stars, for the reasons stated earlier. It does cover the thought of certain philosophers in a way that is reasonably complete (for an overview) and relatively easy to understand. However, one should not read this book as though it were a general introduction to the story of philosophy.

I read this book when I was 18 and understood only maybe 25%, but it became a huge influence on my life. Now I have just re-read it at age 61, and figure I understood about 80% of it, and got an even bigger thrill from it this time around. Like religion or science or anything else, there is no need to completely understand philosophy it in order to find pleasure in it. Will Durant is an amazing writer who brings joy and understanding to the history of some of the world's greatest minds, and how they painted God, human nature, politics and wisdom in general.

This work is amazing! This work is a gem. The expressions and choice of words makes this really poetry. If the quality of communication is what makes something a work of art (LRH, "Art"), then this book qualifies as enduring art. Furthermore, there is this pervading earnestness that only comes from one who is invested in what he writes about; it is no mere intellectual juggernaut tour de force. Mind you, a dictionary must be kept close at hand to look up the words that may not be clearly understood in order to imbibe its nectar. It may not be light reading--but it is magnificent reading! This book is an exemplar of a quote by Leonardo in the "Introduction," "the noblest pleasure, the joy of understanding." There is enormous pleasure between the covers of this work at times even rapture!

I read this when I was in high school, so it was my introduction to philosophy. I didn't understand much of it at the time, but stuck with philosophy and history (where Durant was also a major figure for me) in college and went on to teach both subjects. I bought this as a present for a young friend just entering high school and have told him it presents many windows. They will be dark for him now, but gradually he will begin to see wonderful things through some of them.

Ariel and will Durant have written many wonderful books but The Story of Philosophy by Will is the epitome of his ability to write a scholarly and complete history of the great minds that have pondered the essence of life. If you have never read anything about philosophy, this the place to start. If you are already a student of that science, this lengthy volume will add to your knowledge. Durant does not espouse any particular school of philosophy but he lays out the basics of the thinking of the most recognized minds that allows you to make your own judgment. Even if you have only a passing interest in philosophy, get this book and keep it at your bedside. You will find yourself reading it many more times than you would ever have guessed.

This book is wonderful, but if you like this book, avoid the cheap 99 cent version. So many typos, it can be hard to read sometimes. Even the cover reads "Phiosophy" (yes, no L in the word!). Be aware that there's a much better Kindle version that you can find on Amazon if you search with "Story of Philosophy Simon and Schuster". It costs a little more, but it's worth it.
