I’ll be teaching an intro to Shakespeare class for homeschooled middle schoolers, and this is exactly the resource I needed to make Shakespeare approachable before we dive into the full text. I love the hilarity, the use of original phrases from the bard himself (highlighted so it’s easy identifiable), and most of all the fact that it’s a play (as opposed to story form, like so many other “Shakespeare for kids” resources out there). Its the perfect way to help make Shakespeare not only understandable, but enjoyable! (That was Will’s original intent, after all.)

My students have read the script, auditioned for their parts and we are starting rehearsals to get this show ready for our April performance. As an elementary theatre teacher in a public Title 1 school, I have been teaching about Shakespeare for years. What the students have taught me, is that they LOVE Shakespeare. Therefore, this year I chose Brendan P. Kelso's - Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream for Kids - for my after school Drama Club students to work for their spring show. I love how the script is written to accommodate three different cast sizes and how accessible the storyline is to my 10 & 11 year students. However, most of all, I love how much the students are excited to work on this show. Wish us luck!

We are a few days away from our production of Brendan Kelso's wonderful adaptation of this play and we are having so much fun working on it! There's just enough of the original Shakespeare in it to give everyone a feel for the language. The rest of the dialogue is contemporary and funny without sacrificing any of the important points of the story. It really engaged the children and they've been discussing the characters as if they really exist! (When everyone has opinions about whether or not they think Demetrius is a jerk or Helena is a doormat, you know they are fully engaged!) Most importantly, this work encourages the children to give themselves over to the story and really get into the parts because they are so much fun to play and so easily within the kids' grasp! Our students were so proud that they were able to come in on day 2 of rehearsal announcing that they had already memorized their lines!Incorporating some of the actual lines from the original play is a great idea because it puts Shakespearean language alongside modern language and shows them that the two are not as different from each other as they may imagine. This takes all the fear out but leaves in all the fun. (And Shakespeare is great fun!)I cannot recommend this series enough. We had such a great time with this production!Will definitely collect all the books in this series as we cannot wait to try them all out!

As the Drama Coach at a low-income school, I knew that some of the kids weren't even going to have ever heard of Shakespeare, and I wasn't sure how this would go over. They LOVED it! This play has the perfect amount of silliness to keep them interested and make Shakespeare easy to digest for 4th and 5th graders. We did the longer version and I wasn't sure if they would pull it off, but it ended up being fantastic. The kids really enjoyed this taste of The Bard. As we were wrapping up our play, kids were already asking when we could do the next. Kelso does a great job of keeping the message of the play intact, while making it easy for kids to follow and appreciate. I highly recommend "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

A life long student of theatre myself, I absolutely LOVE Brendan Kelso's Playing with Plays series! Just recently produced Midsummer with a group of ten year olds at a summer theatre camp and it was a huge hit! What I love about this series is how accessible it is for kids. I'm a firm believer that engaging kids with the classics at a young age is the best way to get them hooked. I was especially touched and impressed with Mr. Kelso's prompt replies to my emailed questions and how willing he was to work with me to figure out a solution to my timeline issues with script purchase and delivery. Even though he was on vacation, he worked some magic and I was able to get my kids a autographed script and fun Shakespeare tattoos before camp ended. I highly recommend all of the Shakepeare plays, they're a hoot!

The Yongle emperor in the 15th century ordered the construction of what is now Beijing, even though the imperial capital was in Nanjing, to use up surplus cash. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, the oldest and longest artificial river in the world. did the same.All these gigantic projects were created the Chinese tradition of massive construction projects on the moon. Robinson makes that story read more like actual history than science fiction.The scientific detail in this novel is very compelling -- far more compelling that the development of the characters. This book started out great and had some interesting ideas. Then it started to drag and it got worse as it went on. When suddenly it's cut short, not ending at all and another potentially good novel is turned into a freaking serial. Just finish the dang book, dude. Cripes, I'm not going to buy any more!

I’m a fan of KSR, especially the Mars trilogy but this book in contrast just wanders and then stops. Nothing is really tied up so you assume there must be another book but instead of good story telling, it is more like the publisher walked in the room and said, “that’s it!” between continuous chapters. A seasoned author can do better.

Excellent.Many topics of science and man's acceptance of science shown. Also publishing non science thought and trying to get it accepted without it passing the rigorous testing and verification needed is shown.Carl Sagan was a world class Astronomer/ scientist who believed in the scientific method of science evaluation. However he wanted conflicting views on established ideas on science brought out to the public but with good research that could be verified. Carl had an open mind and tried not to dismiss different scientific ideas just because they were different than the established thought. He did want sufficient study, evaluating and testing on the new principles before acceptance. Carl says there is no way to show the existence or non existence of God, and does not put religion down. Its basically a matter of faith.The title Brocan's Brain is based on a Frenchman who was the father of brain development and structure as to how the brain worked. Broca examined hundreds of brains. Carl was in France and actually held Broca's preserved brain in his hands at the Musee de Homme.Many aspects of different religions are shown and discussions on the existence or non existence of a God are given. The book gives a fascinating account of older cultures' perceptions of the cosmos. Many of the giants like Aristotle, Galileo and others have their ideas shown. There is a wide showing about many aspects of science both and mythology. Also spiritualism, kooks, and charlatans are shown. The Big Bang, Steady State and Collapsing universe are shown. His view of the quest for knowledge and science as a candle in the dark makes this a must read for the scientist and layman as wellRead this and watch Cosmos, you will not be disappointed.

This collection of essays and articles by Carl Sagan is simply one of the finest and most lucid books to explain scientific issues. Sagan is unparalleled at making the complicated clear and the obscure obvious, and being entertaining and engaging in the process.

Perhaps my least favourite of all the books that I've read by Sagan, but it still contains enough of his gems to make it worth reading. I thought the last chapter, in particular, was a real marvel of combining science and philosophy. I found myself skipping most of a couple of chapters, though, just because I thought he spent more time on a topic than it was worth.
