About the Author

After watching the movie "Ghost and the Darkness" I wanted to read the original story that was the basis for the movie. At first I bought the paperback book of the same title as the movie, however that was essentially a carbon copy of the movie. In the back of the book was a reference to the original story, "The Man-Eaters Of Tsavo". I ordered it and what a great story! The original story is even more compelling than the movie. I liked it so much I bought a second copy for a friend that is an avid hunter and sportsman in his own right.

The Man-Eaters of Tsavo by J. H. Patterson is available in several editions. It's sort of confusing which one to buy. Here are some notes on each edition:The Man-Eaters of Tsavo (Peter Capstick Libary Series).Publisher: St. Martins Press, 1985. 384 pages.When The Man-Eaters of Tsavo was originally published in 1907, it contained a wealth of photos and a map. Photos appeared on every two to three pages. These photos showed many local scenes, as well as the infamous lions. These photos are very valuable for establishing a sense of place that words alone can't do. Beware of inexpensive reprints that omit all the photos and the map. The quality of the photo reproductions is not great in the Capstick Library edition. But these are the best looking photos in any edition currently available. This edition is virtually identical to the original book. The page sequence is the same, with only the addition of some new preface pages. This is the book to buy; however, for some strange reason it's hard to find on Amazon. If you search for "tsavo", you'll find used copies of this book at horribly inflated prices. But this book is still in print. Search for "tsavo capstick" and you'll find it--along with very reasonably priced used copies (under $10).Man Eaters Of Tsavo [Hardcover].Publisher: St. Martins Press, 1985. 384 pages.If you search for "tsavo" on Amazon, this is the hardcover edition of this book that you'll find. PattersonThis is a different Patterson entirely. And thus a different book. Bruce Patterson is a scientist who recently studied the lions of Tsavo, while J. H. Patterson is the hunter who shot the infamous Tsavo lions. The scientist's book is good. But you should be aware that this isn't the tale told by the hunter.Ghosts of Tsavo : Stalking the Mystery Lions of East Africaby Philip CaputoThis a contemporary tale of a journalist following in J.H. Patterson's steps and investigating the lions of Tsavo. This is a good book. The first chapter is incredible as he retells the story of the lions that killed a mind-boggling number of railroad workers (possibly over 120 people died). The subsequent chapters are of a more personal nature as Caputo journeys to Africa and looks for the maneless Tsavo lions.I hope this helps!

This book has all the charm and grace that it should. While he is most indeed a hunter it is written in such way that you can't be angry about it. The writer is very detailed about his adventures and they're a wonderful read. He's smart charming and funny I laughed a few times he also writes about all the different tribes he mets and that alone is worth reading. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes English books and anyone who wants to learn more about the history of Africa.

Incredible account of dangers, hardships, courage and the pursuit of survival in Victorian Africa. This is a account of lions who seem to be almost supernatural and always one step ahead of man. If you like sitting on the edge of your seat, this is a read for you. It's a story you will always remember.

A well-written, easy read, without the usual stuffy, pretentious overstated prose characteristic of the period in which it was written. Very enjoyable. And the story goes well beyond the Tsavo incident, into the constructing of his bridges and his trophy-hunting. Even the insanity of killing everything in sight---while pillaging Africa---was made tolerable reading by the author. Over all, a revealing glimpse into the mind of a Victorian "English gentleman" hunter---which should give any sane person pause, and thank the gods that the only "proper Englishmen" are now just figureheads. I hope.

Colonel Patterson's first hand account of dealing with the Maneating Lions of Tsavo is riveting reading indeed! Also entertaining is his description of conditions and happenings along the trackway and his interactions with workers and natives alike. While the actual settling of the lions makes for the highlight of the book, Colonel Patterson's handling of the mutiny of the workers and their conspiracy to murder him is capital reading. Colonel Patterson was a very brave man who never flinched from what he saw as his duty and you will be glad to have gotten to know this humble hero after finishing the book.

This book has not only been extremely helpful for me, but I have purchased it for others several times since then with rave reviews and so much thanks. I can't part with lending my own copy because it would get passed around and never returned - always the sign of a great, beloved book. Some people might argue this wasn't the most well-written book at times, (a lot of reviews that say the author is rambling or arguing unnecessary points, getting too preachy, or going on random tangents, etc.) but I have to give this book 5 stars because it is the most helpful thing I've come across yet - I've purchased quite a few on the topic and this is by far the best. The true purpose of this book is offering comfort and reassurance to people in the midst of complete and utter heartbreak, and as a Christian looking for support on the topic I've found it to be immensely heartening in the midst of grief. The first chapter "Pets Are Not Petty" was something I personally appreciated because it comes from a true place of understanding and reassurance that it's okay to mourn a pet and that their loss is not trivial. This book also has a 30 day devotional to reference as you work through your grief. I highly recommend it and will continue to gift it to friends and family struggling with the loss of a pet. I hope this is helpful.

Having experienced a fair amount of loss, I can say without hesitation, that nothing has been as hard as the loss of my Jack Russell, Trevor. It was the first time that anything affected me so much and for so long. It has now been more than a year, and I still have moments or days that I feel like I just lost him. Many people don’t understand or think I should get over it. I’ve been told I shouldn’t feel what I feel and that The Bible tells us that we are not to love animals as we love each other. Well, The Bible tells us a lot of things, and the great thing about it is that at any time, any one passage can be interpreted differently depending on the reader who applies the lessons to their life and current situation.When Trevor died, I was completely heartbroken. I’m 40, single, and have never had children. That little guy was the one constant source of goodness, innocence and joy for me during nearly 13 years that saw a lot of change and upheaval. When he had a stroke coming out of anesthesia, it was a shock and unexpected. My life forever changed because of a mistake in dosing by a new vet who didn’t listen to me or look at his previous surgical notes. She did everything wrong, but I still felt so guilty that I hadn’t been able to protect him. I found myself not questioning faith, but feeling a deeper understanding of it and looking to find proof in scripture that I would be able to be with this most important friend again.I didn’t care for responses from my usual people sources on Biblical citations. So, I searched Amazon and found Cold Noses at the Pearly Gates. Admittedly, it’s a bit slow to start, and the author is very repetitive to the point of frustrating when apologizing if his views aren’t inline with the readers. I’d like to scream out “Hey, people are reading this for comfort and possibilities in the hereafter, quit apologizing for your opinion and get on with it!” It’s a fairly long preface that takes you down strange paths talking about evolutionary theories and theology studies. I get that writers need to establish their credibility and give you an overview of what your about to read, but it could’ve been done a lot more effectively and efficiently. For me, he’s a preacher, he lost a pet unexpectedly, found hope in several passages and here’s what they are. My point is that if you get through the beginning, which can be lengthy and mind numbing, the rest of the book does cite specific verses that actually talk about our animals and their ultimate faith. I haven’t really found another record that is this fact-based and thorough. I appreciate the way it is laid out very straightforward and easily referenced. The work gave me great comfort in my lowest time, when not much else could. For me, Heaven wouldn’t be the perfect infinite utopia without everyone I’ve truly loved and received love from, and that includes my sweet Trevor, who taught me what perfect, unconditional love, can be.

I lost my 13 yr old Great Dane/St Bernard named Buddy. His name fit him, he was my Buddy and I loved him just like I had given birth to him. I know that sounds strange, but I do feel like his Mom. The day I lost him is still very painful but someone recommended this book and I thought maybe Buddy was in heaven after he passed but after this book, I know he is! I do not doubt it at all. This author is very special and well educated in theology and he is a Christian. He gives you his contact info and will answer you and he has other books like this. I am very grateful I read this and highly recommend it for any animal lover.

This book is very good! It has helped me along with the grieving of losing my dog of 16 years!. The first few chapters I was kind of not really into it because I wanted my pain to stop.....as I read on I started understanding how this book explains the process of grieving step by stepWith quotes from the bible which are very comforting. Good luck....

I just lost my best 4-footed little girl and was bereft. The bible was not as specific as I saw it, to find the Peace I needed so badly. I looked at Amazon's offerings and this book seemed to jump out at me. It was beyond perfect. I won't spoil it for others - but if you want assurance that your beloved pet will be with you in heaven order this book. It's not man's words but God own as written in scripture. He searches the bible and uses God's work to absolutely prove that animals do go to heaven and we will definitely see our pets again. For anyone who has lost a pet this is a must read. For anyone grieving over the loss of a beloved pet, this book is for you. Gary does an awesome job in explaining the fact that pets do have eternal life. He bases his conclusions on Biblical scripture with logical arguments. It really helped me in the loss of our pet and I could not put this book down! Not what I expected and I failed to realize how dated it was. The book is divided up into activities rather than locations, so its not ideal for a quick reference book when on a road trip. I'd suggest looking elsewhere for a book which is more up to date and travel friendly. Returning it!

I love all of Tattie Maggard works. This new book is fantastic. Tells you where and how the Amish live and work. Tells us what Tattie is all about and how she came to write Amish fiction. She explains the differences between Lancaster County Amish people and Swan Creek Amish. Takes you behind the scenes of how Amish people in different states live and they are different from many Amish communities in the US. I could not put this book down. I learned a lot about Tattie and her family and why she writes these books. Its a book you don't want to miss reading. Can't wait for more of Tattie Maggard's books to come out. She is by far, one of my favorite Amish authors.

I am so glad that I pre-ordered this book! There are books that I have lost interest in and a few that I will never finish - but not this one. There are adventures from beginning to end. Many times I found myself laughing aloud, them thoughtfully pondering a lesson delightfully presented. This book will encourage all who read it and will appeal to a broad range of readers - animal lovers, families, and anyone needing a cheering read that encourages us along our way. It is a book that I will gladly recommend to friends and I already have thought of a couple of them to gift a copy to. Thank you Rachel Anne Ridge for sharing Flash and your own journey with us. I think I will try running with the horses!

Flash: the homeless donkey is a true story about a couple who found a stray donkey on their property one night. They go through the routine of finding the owner and end up adopting the long eared critter. Flash, by example, then teaches the couple many spiritual lessons.I liked the book very much because it was spiritual without being religious and full of wisdom without being preachy. I recommend this book highly which is full of sage wisdom and is fun to read.

We have a saying around our house, and it's based on a story from the Old Testament in the Bible. "If God can use a donkey, He can use anybody!" We also live by the verse that promises us that God is the same, yesterday, today and forever.Need proof? Then pick up a copy of a new release from Tyndale Publishers and be prepared to have more than just a nodding acquaintance with the power of God through a four legged animal!Flash is adorable (how they ever got him to pose for that cover I'll never know!), but he's trouble on four legs. I mean, c'mon...he's a donkey! Follow Flash from that fateful night when the Ridge family stumbled onto his path and read along as Rachel shares the profound life lessons God brought into her family life.From "finding your passion", learned after Flash, ahem, had his way with a neighbor's filly, to cultivating a love for others as Rachel embarks on what should be a hallucinogenic nightmare of a remodel job that ends up turning into so much more (just so you know, the lady she worked for had parrots that watched Barney for days...yeah, weird!).Rachel is candid, witty and heartwarming as she shares her story and her journey with Flash, the family donkey. She almost made me want a homeless burro of my very own. Okay, she didn't really, but she did write a book that is going on my 'keep and read again' shelf!How did I discover "Flash"? I myself read a review that stirred my interest, so I ordered a copy. Yes, reviews do influence people to read books, so go and get your copy of "Flash" and share the love with a review or recommendation.And if you ever stumble upon a stray donkey...God might be trying to talk to you...you never know!

I cannot even begin to express how absolutely delightful, moving, encouraging and wonderful I think this book is. From the sweet front cover to the back you will find a story that grabs you and moves your heart and blesses your socks off. You will laugh, and cry and sigh and nod. You will be encouraged to see life in a way that moves you to grow and to risk and find comfort and meaning and sometimes (maybe often?) in the most unlikely places. You will fall in love with a donkey and a dog and neighbours and a family and a God who really does work in surprising and wonderful ways. Rachel's writing is warm and engaging, interesting and moving. She handles language in such a way that it makes a "simple" donkey and hisexploits (and those of his new family) come alive. Her ability to see beyond the "obvious" and draw life changing and transforming meaningout of the everyday (and not so everyday) happenings, crises, challenges, surprises, conundrums and blessings is a gift I'm so glad she shared with us.I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I have one regret -- that I cannot put into words just how beautifully written and how wonderfulthis book is...and how good for the soul.

Rachael Ann ridge shared her vulnerability, the same vulnerability most people share. She shared with us how the Lord showed his mercy and grace for her as she meditated on lessons she learned from her donkey. I appreciated her honest and her h u not. I have told almost everyone to read it, because we all can so relate to her human fears. Most of us have seen the powers of grace, a few could use the reminder that it is the traveling not the destination that is important. Who we travel with can make us or break us. Don't miss out. Read the book.

I had received the audiobook to review for free, but enjoyed this book so much I bought a hard copy of the book for a gift. I really like the way this author writes. I could really relate to her emotions and thoughts, and felt she put it all together very well in this story.Most importantly, to me, was the fact that there was not one use of bad language. I knew I could give this book as a gift for a teenager I am very close to, without any hesitation or concern.You may have to be an animal lover to enjoy the book, but regardless, the message is there for anyone if you are willing and open to receive it.I know so many other reviewers have gone into more detail about this book, but I am just here to say: Its a clean, decent book with a clear clean message. If you are looking for a clean read or a gift for someone, this is a book you can purchase without concern.

Wiz: The cards themselves are quality, the artwork shows exactly what the items look like, which has always been a bit sketchy in the past editions. Convenient information for players who have just found/stolen/bought a new item and you don't want to have to look up all the stats. Also useful as a GM to quickly equip some baddies that the players are unexpectedly facing.Drek: Incomplete details involving whether or not items have smartlinks, laser sights, suppressors, gas vent systems, etc. There is no indications on what it is that the item already has on it and how many customization slots are actually left on it. It is just the in game stats and nothing more. Many items in this come with built in accessories and wireless bonuses, which is a new feature. Those should've also been referenced somewhere on the card.Scan This: I feel that they could have done more with the cards themselves. There's no reason to have the standard playing card backing on them. It isn't like you're going to be playing poker with them, they are reference tools. They should have at least put the description of the item on the back or, as mentioned before, accessory slots taken and available. To find this, you're still going to have to look it up in the book, which they could have added the page number that the item in question could be located in SR5e. Which, for a bunch of cards that are supposed to be convenient, seems a bit inconvenient.Are they good? Yes. Will I be buying the other sets? No.

There are several key problems ... The cards do not account for all your basic gear from the core book, they just cover a few items of each classification. From there, the cards do not even have all the info about the gear they do provide. I will give you an example: Ingram Smartgun X, the card provides a pic and the basic stats (does NOT include what page it is in the book), you have to pull out the book to discover it has a gas-vent 2, integral sound supressor, and built in Smartgun system (there is a difference between external and internal systems). End result, the cards are a novelty, not useful. I feel they are overpriced for just being a novelty, so there really is no reason to buy these.

Needs more for the price. its nice for a guideline but it really feels random for what items are listed for the accessories. great quick refference guide or you find this as yuo hand players cards face down to repersent loot. lists all the info needed on cards about the said items.

I was having a conversation with a friend; wouldn't it be useful if there were cards with gear stats and images on them? We both agreed that Shadowrun would be the perfect setting for this. Then I discovered these.Shadowrun is a setting/system that where one's choice of sidearm can say a lot about a person; these cards really help with that. Also, it's nice to have an image for what's being pointed at your head :p

The gear cards are complete garbage. There is no reason to own these as the cards contain exactly the same information that you would directly write on your character sheet in the Weapons sections. What would have made these much better is if the item cards contained all the information found in the items detailed wording/description - example would be any weapon that comes with attachments like folding stocks and laser sights. This information is not on card and easily could have been added.

First off I was not compensated for this review (I wish). The cards are excellent compared to the cheap price. Some reviewers want the universe for free, but realistically these look great. They can save the gm time arming a group on the fly, and looking up damage.Great for using at a convention, game shop or even the table at home.

Don't let my 3 star rating deter you. Brett Markham did a good job writing this bok and I'm not unhappy to have bought it. I think that, for the length and amount of information contained, the bok is overpriced. There's good info here and urea worth knowing, for sure. Some things are a bit incomplete. For example, Markham includes a number of jerky marinade recipes but doesn't hint at how much meat the recipes can marinate. It's probably obvious to him, but I really don't know, so I'll need to do my own research. I can do that of course, but then I guess I don't need his expertise.Quite a lot of the book is taken up with instructions for building a homemade dehydrator. I'm probably not going to do that, and if I did want to, there are lots of free plans online to choose from.That said, he's got lots of interesting suggestions for making instant-mix foods. I'll probably try some of them out.

I was not as impressed as I wanted to be by this book. I mean with the title of food dehydrating bible I thought it would be a more comprehensive collection. It is an easy read, and gives basic knowledge if you are just starting out and unfamiliar with the dehydration process.

Very Weill written. Lot of good information that I can put to good use. The directions for build your own are excellent. Thank!

Specialty Cookbook - May prove to be a little too difficult to do in the field

I wish this book contained more recipes and more photographs. It discussed ways to dehydrate food and how to make dehydrators.

Very good basic information. Excellent book to get started with. However, the book has no depth; so, the tittle is misleading.
