Mette Harrison has done it again--she's taken 2-dimensional, somewhat stale characters from the Book of Mormon and turned them into real people with real and relatable struggles. The Book of Abish begins at Abish's birth and follows her childhood and young adulthood. Abish goes from what is basically a throwaway part in the Book of Mormon into an integral character. During the book, Abish evolves from a spoiled child into an intelligent, strong woman. It is thanks to her the Lamanites received the gospel. Her relationship with her earthly father and her Father in Heaven are very interesting to read about and very touching. I also really liked Harrison's take on what Abish's family might have looked like and how each of her sisters was very different from each other while dealing with similar struggles in their own homes.I enjoyed The Book of Laman a little more than The Book of Abish, but Abish was absolutely worth reading and something that enriched my personal study of the scriptures.I was provided with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Author Mette Harrison has really hit her stride in this latest novel based on characters from the Book of Mormon. Her previous novel in this style, “The Book of Laman,” was interesting but never quite believable, but “The Book of Abish” features a character with real depth and dimensionality. For a character with an appearance of only a few verses in the Book of Mormon, Harrison has fashioned a backstory that is both believable and interesting. Her Abish emerges as a fully-formed female character whose actions are understandable in light of her family situation and her personal spiritual development. The story of Ammon and King Lamoni also gets woven into the tale, again in understandable, plausible terms. All in all, “The Book of Abish” is a real delight, an entertaining expansion of a character from the Book of Mormon, but one need not be Mormon to enjoy it. “The Book of Abish,” like Abish herself, is quite capable of standing on its own two feet.I received an ARC for review.

Keira, reviewing under her husband's account: Mette Harrison is the Mormon Anita Diamant. In "The Book of Abish", Harrison adds part of her own soul to the titular character, who is known by a single verse in scripture. This heart-warming and gut-wrenching narrative has you cheering for this Tomboy Savior of her people. The ending provides so much peace and joy after you have mourned and struggled alongside her.

As an ex-Mormon who left the church under some duress, I approached this book with some anxiety. However, I am familiar with other writing by Mette Harrison and I have known her ability to give complex answers when orthodoxy would have demanded simplicity, and so I was willing to give it a try. I was honestly surprised how beautiful the book was. The story was gentle, both straightforward and nuanced, and it never indulged in didactic or overbearing theology. The end of the book was the most like the story in the Book of Mormon, so ex-Mormons may find themselves wanting to skip over bits of it. But I appreciated this story of a young girl in a situation much bigger than she was, overcoming odds with nothing more than hope and faith. Also, the suggestion that Ammon was gay made my queer heart very happy.

I loved having a relatively believable account of someone who is barely mentioned in the Book of Mormon. There are so many untold stories, and Harrison does a great job in imagining them.Even though there's a romance, the book isn't ultimately about that. It's about Abish as a person and her experiences.

I got this book in the mail last night-and couldn't put it down. This was very well written, and fascinating to imagine a life of a overlooked character from The Book of Mormon. I enjoyed the journey of Abish, from her young life to her challenges, to her ultimate joy. I will definitely share this with others.

I tried reading this for 4 nights now and I can't get past the first couple of pages. This book uses too many big college words that I can't pronounce.
