I grew up in St. Pete, Florida, when the HMS Bounty was a permanent attraction moored at the old downtown Pier. I remember taking the tour as a kid, and was heartbroken when I learned of her sinking off the coast of Cape Hatteras during Hurricane Sandy. I purchased this book on Kindle in hopes of reaching some sort of understanding of what happened, and why.I wanted to give this three and a half stars. It’s a workmanlike piece of writing, telling the story of what happened to the Bounty in fairly complete detail. But it gets confusing in places, largely due to the author’s choice of switching between referring to people by their last names in one section, and first names in another. I frequently found that I had to use the search function to figure out who he was referring to.I felt that the author missed an opportunity to juxtapose an irony at the heart of the Bounty story - that it was originally meant to be burned to its keel in the final shot of the MGM movie production. But Marlon Brando had grown so fond of the ship that he threatened to quit if the ship was burned. And so the crew devised a mockup for the burning scene. So, but for Marlon Brando’s obstinance, none of this would have happened. The author also seems anxious - perhaps a little too anxious for my taste - to rehabilitate Capt. Robin Walbridge, who made the fateful decision to sail Bounty into Hurricane Sandy. For me, the effort falls a bit flat. The picture that emerges of Walbridge is that of a man who was obviously highly intelligent, with a curious mind, but who also seemed to be a bit of a control freak and thus failed to give due regard to factors that were beyond his ability to control. But I give the author credit for laying the facts out there for the reader to make up his or her own mind. Finally, the author does a very nice job of detailing the almost superhuman effort of the multiple Coast Guard search and rescue personnel who made it possible for most of Bounty’s crew to come home alive. This, for me, was the most educational part of the book.

The early pages are standard fare: setting the stage, so to speak. We learn about some of the principles, like captain and crew, and the vessel itself. The story comes to life only as the ship and crew face peril on the Atlantic, sailing into a hurricane. The abandonment of the Bounty and rescues by the Coast Guard are gripping, and rightfully occupy an important portion of the book. The reader cannot help but feel sympathy and pride for the survivors and the rescuers.Yet I feel let down. The authors shared vital information with their readers during the course of the story and then never returned to it at the end of the book. Like, What About The Pumps? So much time was given to the agony over inoperable and inadequate pumps and we must wonder what the inquiries concluded about this. In fact, we have no idea what the investigations and inquiries found about anything because the authors left this out.Perhaps we can draw our own conclusions, and so we must. This book can be taken as a rousing story, but is not complete as an instructive or cautionary tale.

The book is a bit slow at first with all of the personal background, but you need to understand the people to understand the events. A captain who was highly respected and a great teacher to his crew. Crew members who only knew tall ship sailing from their captain and did not tend to question the chain of command. I have sailed from VA to the British Virgin Islands each year for the last 6 years and was in VA when this occurred. I have read a lot about the events and there is a lot on line. I find the book as unbiased as you can get and it gives an accurate timeline of what was happening. ** Don't miss reading the Afterward! Read the book and then check out the rest of the info on the web, including a day by day account of the CG hearings by a former rescue swimmer Mario V. I found the book a 3.5 (rounded to 4). Even better were "Overboard" and "A Storm Too Soon".

Well written account of a Captain making multiple stupid mistakes. I'm a marine contractor and I NEVER leave the dock unless my Tug and barge are in 110% condition. You do not screw around with mother nature. To leave into a hurricane in a leaky, rotten old boat with bad bilge pumps, wrong fuel filters, and not even checking your emergency pumps is the worst mistake I have heard in a long, long time. Lucky more people weren't killed....kudos to USCG for saving those they could.

Horror and Heroism in a super storm.Michael J. Tougias does it again with his careful interviews of all the players in yet another high-seas rescue. His respectful treatment of the captain's fateful decision - to try to out-run the hurricane - is a masterpiece of discretion and respect. The boat and two lives are lost. Fourteen lives are saved through Coast Guard Courage and skills. This is one of those hard-to-put-down and I'm-disappointed-that-it's-over books.

this is a book I did not want to put down! Thorough and well written, gave plenty of detail, but little that was unimportant or superfluous. For anyone interested in wooden ships, there is a lot of interesting facts. Most of all, the reader comes away with an appreciation of the dedication, fortitude and skill of the US COAST GUARD!

Excellent book for anyone interested is true sea adventures, or the Bounty. Full if information about the storm, ship and people on it.Enjoyable read

Very good read. Awesome account of what the Coast Guard rescue people did. Amazing that they were able to save almost everyone. The only reason I gave it four instead of five stars is that I felt it spent too much time covering every possible background detail of the main characters. Most of the background info was relevant to the story but in my opinion there was just a little too much. In summary, it's a very good read and seems to me like a perfect candidate for a movie.
